You guys probably won't believe me, but I have strong connections in the Knicks organization. I'm a Knick fan so this hurts but I can only report what I've heard in the last few hours.

Melo has informed the Knicks today that they are out of the running. He really like the direction of the organization with Phil, but he's just not comfortable with this years roster. Melo has NOT made a final decision on his new team yet, but Melo has a soft spot for the Knicks and thought he should let them know ASAP so they can go on about their off-season and make other plans.

From what I can gather, Melo's two top choices are Chicago and Houston. He's deciding between those two and will likely have a decision before the weekend is over. I asked 3 people where they thought Melo was going...2 of them said Chicago...1 said Houston. They also speculated Gasol's decision could make an impact on the final decision.

As we've heard from Woj and others, Gasol has multiple options right now so this could drag out a bit.

The only theoretical way possible the Bulls could acquire Gasol and Melo would be a complex S&T involving the Lakers, Knicks, Bulls and a fourth team like the Jazz. Am I correct? That seems far fetched to me.

Chicago could go to the Lakers right now and ask them if they're interested in a Taj for Gasol swap. I think that's a fair trade, given where both teams could be at.

Then they would just have to sell the Knicks on taking Boozer, provided Carmelo commits. The latter is the hard part.

Depends on what Gasol wants to play for. 5 mil exception? Then all you would have to do is S&T Boozer to the Knicks and sign Gasol to the exception. If the Knicks won't take Boozer, then yeah, you need another team. But not the Lakers.

well he said the options were given to melo. less than max with gibson... max with gasol. melo has to choose bulls then choose one of those options... I don't understand why gibson is key if gasol will make the same money but if it means we get 1 good bigman and melo so be it

Gasol was plan B, not a continuation of A. When GarPax flew out to LA it became apparent no-Melo.

The Bulls have given Melo two options. One with Gibson and one without Gibson and Melo getting the max. Also the Gasol stuff is linked to this. I can't get into specifics but the Bulls could land Melo at 22mil, Gasol at 8mil and still have the MLE for Nikola.

BTW does the without Gibson option involve sign and trade?

I think the w/o Gibson is if no S&T. I can't get into specifics but the bottom line is the Bulls have told Melo they would give him the 4 year max.

I still think he stays with the Knicks.

If we're acquiring Melo at his full max, then Gasol has to be acquired in a sign-and-trade too in order to get Mirotic at the MLE. We would not be under the cap and the MLE is not worth anywhere near $8 million.

Boozer can't be amnestied for all of the above to happen. It's either one giant sign-and-trade or two seperate sign-and-trades. There's a few different ways to do it player wise, but none of it would be through cap space.

I'd rather keep Taj but if we need to make the money work, we could trade Boozer, Taj, MDJ, Snell, maybe a pick to the Lakers for Gasol on a 3/20 deal. That would clear some more cap room for Melo.
