You guys probably won't believe me, but I have strong connections in the Knicks organization. I'm a Knick fan so this hurts but I can only report what I've heard in the last few hours.

Melo has informed the Knicks today that they are out of the running. He really like the direction of the organization with Phil, but he's just not comfortable with this years roster. Melo has NOT made a final decision on his new team yet, but Melo has a soft spot for the Knicks and thought he should let them know ASAP so they can go on about their off-season and make other plans.

From what I can gather, Melo's two top choices are Chicago and Houston. He's deciding between those two and will likely have a decision before the weekend is over. I asked 3 people where they thought Melo was going...2 of them said Chicago...1 said Houston. They also speculated Gasol's decision could make an impact on the final decision.

As we've heard from Woj and others, Gasol has multiple options right now so this could drag out a bit.

Not understanding why trading Taj's 8 million salary allows us to get Melo at the max + Gasol for 8 mil + Mirotic.

Why can't we just keep Taj's 8 million instead of replacing it with Gasol's 8 million?

I think Taj is a better fit with the team personally.

Taj can be used in a sign-and-trade for Gasol. I don't think Taj would be too upset. He played high school and college ball in Southern California, so it'd be a homecoming for him. For the Lakers it makes sense as well. LA goes with a Randle/Gibson tandem for a few years.

Then you hope New York takes Boozer, picks and some non-guarantees (or Snell) for Carmelo. It's definitely possible, but very much a pipe dream. Doing so allows Chicago to keep their MLE and BAE as well.

I still don't understand why we wouldnt just keep Gibson? Why is it Melo at the max with Pau or Melo < max with Taj if we're proposing paying Pau exactly what Taj makes?

This whole thing shouldn't come down to money. Chicago can afford to pay Melo his first year max and put together a team right now that he hopes the Knicks can put together in a few years.

The Bulls have given Melo two options. One with Gibson and one without Gibson and Melo getting the max. Also the Gasol stuff is linked to this. I can't get into specifics but the Bulls could land Melo at 22mil, Gasol at 8mil and still have the MLE for Nikola.

How can he turn down a situation where he makes the max and is playing with Rose, Noah, Pau, and Butler? Just goes to show if he re-signs with the Knicks he's all about the money and not about winning. I don't care if maybe NY can compete a few years down the road, we would have a good shot at winning championships right now if he signs with us under those circumstances.

That isn't what that means at all.

My only explanation is Pau fits better offensively. Taj might be a better player right now, it's close for sure, but in a few seasons, it won't be. It's pretty much putting all of your chips on the table.

If Gasol comes its without Melo. Melo should make his mind up by tomorrow night. If Melo doesn't come, Taj, Boozer are gone and I expect Gasol to sign with the bulls. We all need to wait on Melo.

That makes no sense. Why would they trade Taj for Gasol if they're not getting Melo? Taj is still on the right side of 30, whereas Gasol is not.

Taj is then used for wing help. It makes plenty of sense.
