Phil is a wildcard in all of this. He can totally play ruiner here and force Melo to sign with the Lakers by flatly refusing to S&T. He can tell Melo its resign in NY or you walk. Then if Melo walks, he gets less money to play for a ****y team, but he might do it just off the principle that he won't be strong-armed into cooperating.

I can confirm what Ralph said about Melo+Gasol, unless we have the same source Trade was discussed. Not sure why, since the Knicks would be taking away a lot of the leverage they have, but there's that.

I'm going over this in my mind over and over. I can't find a concrete reason why all of a sudden LA would come on as favorites now after Melo meeting with Phil other than his camp leaking it out to use as leverage in a S&T. My hype levels are at an all time high. Somebody hold me.

Lakers are the Lakers ... The most glamorous franchise in the NBA ... On the other hand, Los Angeles is the perfect place for La La and her lifestyle ... Combine that with the fact that the Lakers can offer Melo the max, and you could see that we don't stand a chance ... Melo is not about winning ... If he was about winning, he would have already committed to the Bulls ... He is simply after his last fat pay cheque, and a nice place where he can retire ...

I have been talking about Melo using the Lakers for leverage since day 1, and this story confirms it precisely.

The only way Woj could ever report that LA was in the running is if Melo's camp leaks it. Melo's camp isn't full of people with loose lips. It's people leaking what they want to be known. They want it known that Melo is willing to walk for nothing if NY doesn't play ball, and give Melo the S&T he desires to Chicago. That's what's going on. According to Ralph's rumors, and a conglomeration of others, the biggest obstacle is going to be getting the Knicks to swallow the sunk cost of Boozer's corpse with Amare's already on the roster. A 3rd team is probably the solution, but it's a bitter pill to swallow for anybody, and we'll probably pay a pretty price for this. If this goes through we're probably going to absolutely gut our assets, and probably lose at LEAST one if not both of Butler/Gibson.

This actually makes so much sense I didn't have to talk myself into it like with a lot of these other rumors.

Great post. I'd like to hear a counter-argument as to why this LA deal is being leaked now of all times. In previous statements from Melo's camp, it was stated explicitly that the three teams in the running are the knicks, bulls, and rockets. Now all of a sudden LA is on the radar? Don't tell me their pitch was that good the Melo's socks were knocked off, it must have been the matrix movie they showed during the pitch.

There are 2 counter-arguments to be made: Melo IS really interested in LA, and one of his "boys" is an idiot who can't keep his mouth shut. This is unlikely because there has been no history of unintentional leaks thus far, but remember: most people are idiots.
The second is that somebody just plain made this up, and this person had enough credibility that Woj and other reporters were sold on it.

Both are to me, very much less likely that the one I suggested.

Agreed, it will be the shock of my life if Melo goes to LA. I literally can't conceive it or sell it to myself. He gets the same amount of money over less years, but goes to a team in a stronger conference with a roster that has virtually no chance at competing for a trip to the finals. At least if he stays in NYC he doesn't have to uproot his family, and they can rebuild the roster next year for a shot at a considerably weaker east.

That being said, I think we need to operate under the assumption that the LA rumors are a means to an end. I'm not going to assume immediately that it is a S&T situation to bulls, but something is fishy. It doesn't add up, and taking into account everything Melo has said, him going to LA would be counterintuitive to everything said thus far. So either he's been lying this whole time, or LA is somehow a smokescreen. That's my analysis.
