Poll: Detroit's Opening Day Starting PF

Post#1 » by Ghost » Fri Jul 4, 2014 5:24 pm

Pretty simple, just want to get the answer into a poll to see what people are thinking right now.

Who will be our opening day starting power forward?

man this is too tough to call right now as this situation seems like it could go any which way at any moment.

Most of the local guys are saying put your money on Monroe staying, but most of those guys are usually wrong. And even if he stays, that doesn't necessarily mean he will start.

After reading an article yesterday hinting that Stan's vision is to surround Drummond with shooters, I get the sense it could be neither Monroe or Smith starting. As in both get moved, or one gets moved and the other brought off the bench.

There was a tweet today saying the Smith/SAC deal seemed like it was off. So maybe we trade Monroe for Anderson and then start him at PF with Smith off the bench. :dontknow:

Really its impossible to predict right now.

I'm not going to try and spin it.

I will say that Monroe has a decent chance of staying as he's not exploring other teams right now like Hayward has been doing. That indicates with some implication that he wants to stay. Which is good for us with SVG molding him into an actual improved player unlike the absolute crapshoot that Dumars turned this team into during his rookie season to now. I want to see what SVG can do.

I agree that it is too tough to call right now with how free agency is going.

Does anyone know if Monroe signs a max offer sheet with another team and we force that team to sign and trade or else we just match the offer sheet and keep him, is is possible to include Smith or Jennings in the sign and trade as well or can it only be Monroe for players on the team that signed him to the offer sheet?

It's a weird situation, apparently you can't add players to a RFA S&T, but team's have done it in the past somehow. I THINK you just break it into two deals? I'm not entirely sure how they did it, people have talked about it in other threads and mentioned Keith Bouggans or something. But, just curiosity, if Monroe makes 15M as expected, including Jennings 8M would be 23M, who do you want to S&T for that makes so much cash?

As for it being hard to answer the question, obviously I'm aware of that, answer anyways . You can make a case for either player getting traded, both getting traded, or neither getting traded. I just wanted to see where our board was in terms of thinking Monroe will remain on the roster and start over Smith (as that was the main consensus before the draft IIRC).

Teams like the Laker and Heat (unlikely, but if Big 3 all leave) would have significant cap space to take on additional salary without sending players in return I believe. I know the Pistons want something in return if they trade Smith, Jennings or Monroe but moving Smith and Jennings for salary cap wouldn't be a horrible decision right now.

If we S&T Monroe for something tiny--a few 2nd rounders or something--and then dump Smith/Jennings in a deal to the same team that doesn't seem to make sense, we could be found guilty of violations. I think that deals have to make sense on their own, can't get around contract rules by violating the spirit of them.

Also, the Lakers aren't going to pay Monroe $15m to be their primary FA acquisition--only a smaller team that has trouble getting FAs would do that. They might consider it if they sign Melo and need some other talent to round out the team. That's a long shot though. (And no team would give up $23m in raw cap space to get Monroe! Few teams have that much, none would be willing to go that high to take on Monroe plus Jennings.)

If we match: Monroe
If we let Monroe walk: Smith
If Monroe signs the qualifying offer: Smith

My guess is both are in the starting lineup.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

like others have said (to tuff to call)but if you twist my arm lol.

I could see smith starting,if he goes into training camp and displays that athletic ability and he shows his stuff on defense ,I could see stan starting whoever wins the battle between smith and moose, but then again I think one will be traded and I lean toward moose because of all the rumors and the quitness .

Funny how people have said Smith gets paid to much to come of the bench. Yet Monroe is about to make as much/more and one of them will come off the bench. Heck, I guess that means Drummond should be the one off the bench!

I'm a Warrior fan, so this may sound like an ignorant question: By the numbers, it seemed like that Smith/Monroe/Drummond played well in almost every combination as long as they weren't all 3 on the floor at the same time. Did it look that way to people who actually watched the games?
This movie is like the Rocky Horror Picture Show where everyone knows all the lines.

I'm not feeling Moose at the 4, but I'm not feeling the options Detroit really has at the moment.

I think Moose is our best short term option. I'd rather have Moose working from the elbow than Smith spotting up from jumpers in that area.

Long term, SVG will definitely want a stretch 4. Whether he finds one in free agency, or develops one. I think that's why he is high on Jerebko right now, he's the closest thing to a stretch 4 this team has.

I'm holding out for Ryan Anderson. My gut is SVG finds a way to get it done,

Moose from the high post and facilitating the offense from there is our best option. Gives space to Dre and our 3 other shooters. Josh can't run an offense, he's a willing passer at times, but he rarely posts up and records average ppp when he does. I'd rather have someone who's actually controllable on both ends of the floor since SVG can mask Monroe's defense.

Detroit's offense was ranked 19th in the league, yet finished 25th defensively. I can live with Smith's horrid shot selection if Drummond is there to clean the glass. I'm not sure I can watch Monroe get destroyed on the perimeter for much longer.

PF's didn't kill us last year, wings did. We did not have 1 good defender in our starting lineup last season, Drummond included. I trust in SVG to instill a defense to this team.
