I've been begging Mark Deeks for a while now to write an article about this since I think it would garner a ton of hits from Bulls, Knicks, and other NBA fans.
He broke it down in the other Deeks thread. I figured it deserved its own thread.
This is how IT'S POSSIBLE to get
- - Melo at $20M
- keep Taj and Butler
- sign Mirotic
You can discuss changing details here and there, but the point is that IT'S POSSIBLE UNDER THE CBA. Don't listen to all of these journalists that continue to trot out the idea that Boozer is necessary for NY to take back or that getting Melo at $20M means no Mirotic. Just look below.

1) Trade the three unguaranteeds, Snell, Smith, a first and a signed-and-traded Hinrich (three year deal starting at $5,184,140) to New York, as well as Dunleavy to wherever the hell someone wants him, in exchange for Melo starting at an even $20 mil.
2) Amnesty Boozer.
3) Sign McDermott.
4) Spend the non-taxpayer MLE on Mirotic. Beg Augustin like hell to come back for cheap and maybe give him some of that MLE to do so. Convince Mirotic somehow this is in his best interest, too.
5) Sign Bairstow to a two year deal via the minimum salary exception
6) Blag the rest.
Going this route never actually goes under the cap at any point.
Rose/Butler/Melo/Taj/Noah
(insert point guard)/Snell/McDermott/Bairstow/Mirotic/Randolph/some other bench players ideally including a proper center and some shooting (Randolph could be included in the trade or added to a separate one, but he can't be aggregated and doesn't add to the trade math, so there's no real point)
TOTAL COST: About $78 million or so.
MarkDeeks wrote:Knicks can waive the unguaranteeds, pretty much dodge the tax, get a pick and two reasonable and cheap young backups, all as reward for overpaying Hinrich for a year. And given how much PJ and Fish will love Kirk, they probably won't even view it as that anyway.
MarkDeeks wrote:Note that using an amount of the non-taxpayer MLE larger than the taxpayer MLE will impose a hard cap at the apron line of circa $81 million. Should be able to stay under it but worth noting.
Having said all that, IMO, we'd need to include more picks to sweeten the deal. Also, I doubt Augustin and Mirotic split the MLE. REGARDLESS, this thread is to show that doing the following 3 things are possible: Sign Melo at $20M, keep Taj and Butler, and sign Mirotic.
With momentum gaining on the coldfish/dantown (yes, I'll credit BOTH of you!) speculation of Melo using LA as leverage to push Phil to do a S&T, I figured this was thread worthy.
EDIT: meant to say $20M instead of $20.5M.

wait until melo officially signs
