The difference is I think you have your numbers wrong. There's a thread open that explains how we can give Melo $20m and still keep Taj, Butler and sign Mirotic. Yet somehow in your scenario we'd have to strip the entire team to give Melo the extra $2m in year one and end up with just McDermott on the bench. Granted I'm not a cap guru and my math might be off here, but please explain.

Well, I'll start off this way, Mirotic has a $3M buyout. If he takes the room exception ($2.5M per year), he is going to be playing for very little money. Its going to take more than that. Maybe not much more, but more.

I'll do the math myself now. Capspace scenario.
Rose $18.8
Noah $12.7
Butler $2M
McDermott $2M
7 vet mins $3.5M

Total = $39

Caproom = $24M
So, yeah. If you can get Melo to take two million less to start you will have enough room to add another player.

We don't have to lose Taj for nothing. You can trade Boozer, Snell, randolph, Dunleavy, taj and a pick to the Lakers for Gasol on a 3/20 deal and sign Melo starting at 20 mill.

Or you can amnesty boozer, trade taj, snell, randolph and MDJ somewhere, sign a 4 mill dollar big like hill or mcroberts, sign melo at 20 mill and sign someone else for the room exception to go with rose, noah, butler and dougie.

I disagree. I think that team might just contend in the East.

And after reading Ralph's posts yesterday, I got the impression that the Bulls did propose Melo the non-Taj option. We all agree the sign and trade is better if you can pull it off.

One question to ask, though, is do we like this team better than the team as it is constituted right now? It's basically down Taj and some depth and with Melo. I say you have to take this team over what you have now. Only the issue of what to be done with Mirotic confuses the issue for me.

As to whether Melo likes enough, in the case that a sign and trade can't be done, well, that's up to him.

I hope we can just all agree that the Bulls probably ran the capspace scenario by Melo. I just understand why it wasn't their primary pitch because the other scenarios create ridiculously good teams.

Do we like that team better than what we have now? Yeah. However, if the Bulls could sign Stephenson for $10M to start and dump some stuff you would have a similar version to the S&T team.
