You are talking to me, so I will answer: If he were trying to leverage his way to Chicago, why not just put it out there publically that he has asked NY to sign and trade him to Chicago, and put the pressure on Phil Jackson to "behave" and capitulate?
Because if there was no third team present, Melo can't threaten the Knicks to S&T him and risk losing him for nothing. If he declares Chicago right away, it's guarantee PJ will extract the Bulls with assets, and Melo does not want that, because he will not be coming to a team that cannot contend for a title.
It could be Melo angling himself to play for a championship caliber contender, while getting his money.
Melo never made sense basketball wise, so he could using them as leverage for all we know, or he was sold after the Tobey Maguire short film.
