Wiggins isn't going anywhere unless Minnesota decides they want him in a Kevin Love trade.

Can't see them moving Wiggins. Can't figure out who would take Bennett. They other guys though would probably move.

If Melo intentionally leaves, Phil knows that he will at least go and play for the team that is owned and run by his girlfriend, Jeannie Buss. Phil in the end can always say I offer him the max, but he just did not want to be here. In turn, Phil will get enough flexibility with the cap to build the team his way, which he had previously mentioned.

Why would Phil be motivated to a sign and trade with us when he can also do that with the Lakers? If all that we are willing to offer, as some fans here wish, is future compensation in the forms of future draft picks, it will not get done. The Lakers can also offer future draft picks, which are expected to be higher pick since they are in the much tougher Western Conference. Besides, I am pretty sure Phil would rather see Melo go out west to the Lakers to work for his girlfriend, Jeannie Buss, than to see him come to us.
Because LA has outright cap space. Why would they give NY anything?
Edit: beaten by the gorilla
Well, only the Knicks can give that 5th year, so sign and trade makes Melo 30 millions richer. I am pretty sure Melo would prefer that.

Yeah Wiggins would probably play the 2
Irving/Wiggins/James/Thompson/Varejao
That's a very good team
They'd need some vets however

Might move Wiggins for Love. A win now move

While LA isn't a place where he will win anything anytime soon (they certainly won't be a contender next year), it's a better situations for him than New York at least playing wise. Also, it's a better situation for his wife.
So he may very well prefer a sign and trade to Chicago, but I think he would be perfectly content with going to LA if push comes to shove.
All in all, the leverage has always been in Melo's hands. Anyone that ever said New York had any leverage were probably homer Knicks fans.
Why do you think NY's ability to offer $129 million for 5 years (an extra 32 million over everybody else and a guaranteed extra year, no matter what happens) in a place he and his family like being, where he already has a home, as not having leverage?.
EDIT TO ADD: And, yes, I know he's a free agent and can go anywhere he wants and sign for whatever amount of money he wants.
You just answered your own question.

Damnit. We all must find solace in the fact that it will end soon. Until then, we must remain confident because we know we should be, and have faith in our newest team member to make the right decision.

Curious what he would say?
