If we can pry our way into the Warriors Wovles trade for Love we could send Nicholson to the Wolves and eat Lees contract. I get that him and Vuc aren't a great pair on the defensive end but that's looking at the glass half empty. We could potentially be one of the 5 best rebounding teams In the league and Lee is a "Henny guy" through and through. This would officially put us in position to compete for a playoff spot and the best part about the trade is Lee becomes a valuable expiring contract next summer.
Dipo/Payton/Curry
Fournier/B.Gordon/Marble/Green
Harkless/(6th man)Tobias/A.Gordon
Lee/Tobias/KO/Gordon
Vuc/KO/Lee/Deadmond
so we stash the #4 pick deep deep on the bench.
Yea why not. AG is still young and raw but he will only be stashed for 1 season. David Lee would be a great mentor for the kid. We could still play him 10-15 minutes a night his rookie year and by year 2 he will be ready to make a major impact starting in place of Lee or as a starter if Tobias or Vuc play their way out of town and we decide to keep Lee. I hope we can keep both guys but if one of these teams gets trigger happy and offers Tobias or Vuc max we might need to consider letting one walk.
Sorry, but I think that would be a terrible deal.
David Lee is not a Henny guy as you say. He may have great character, but he is not a cost effective basketball player. He contributes significantly in three areas (points, rebounding and assists) that don't necessarily make us a better team in a way that cheaper options could in areas such as rim protection, 3pt shooting etc. all while not being deficient in the areas that are Lee's strong suit. Lee is on the books for the max for the next two years as a player who is not worth max money. "Henny Guys" are the ones who are cost effective for their production (unless you are tanking, see: Maxiell, Jason).
In addition, we have Aaron Gordon who is our #4 draft pick who as you said is probably going to come along slowly... But 10-15 minutes? I have watched Gordon numerous times whether it be in the U19s and at Arizona and I feel pretty confident in saying he could and probably will play anywhere from 15-25 minutes next year, which would be gobbled up by Lee. If Gordon becomes a 25+ minute player in year 2 (not a guarantee, but it is plausible) do you seriously want Lee to be paid 15 million to take away from not Gordon's development, but his production on both ends of the court?
This move is not plausible for the Magic, nor should it be.
