Re: Official Speculation Thread Part 1 (Summer League 2014)
ponder this:
Rob and Jacque flew to LA to recruit Frye. What are the chances they also met with Steve Nash and Lakers GM to see if Nash would play good soldier and mentor Payton if we traded for him? What would they offer us to take Nash? No idea, but he'd be a great mentor to have (if he can practice).

However, there'll probably be a ton of outrage by Magic fans regarding the fact that our NUMBER FOUR pick in the draft isn't starting. IDK, but JV has a lot of lineups to play around with.
I agree that this is the most likely lineup...however I could see it being Dipo and Fournier with Payton coming off the bench to start the season.
As far as the number 4 pick coming off the bench...I really don't get the outrage by some over this proposition. Have people already forgotten that Dipo only started 44 games and was the number 2 pick. Doesn't look like his growth has been stunted from that, at all.
Who will spread the floor when both Payton and A. Gordon are on the floor?
Second Unit:
Payton
B. Gordon
A. Gordon
Nicholson
KOQ
*That's if A. Gordon plays SF. How much do you agree with that proposed lineup?
I still think combining Frye with A. Gordon and Payton would be the best combination, though.

For some reason, I think Oladipo may start at PG because the Magic already have (3) SG's in Green, Fournier and Ben Gordon. And, I seriously doubt you want to see what happens when BG gets a few DNP's around here.
I think the board will collectively breathe a sigh of relief if Gordon is getting DNP CD's. The big question is how Ben Gordon handles it.
I really don't have too much of a problem with BG in 5-10mpg for certain matchups to utilize his shooting and won't get burned too badly on his defense. He can get hot at times.

I don't see frye starting. Our front court would be terrible defensively. In think Frye is the first big off the bench and we start Harkless or AG at the 3.. either that or Tobias is the 6th man and we start Frye with AG or Harkless at the 3.

You aren't wrong but I think it is naive to think that we will have a set "2nd unit" like you described. With the amount of "basketball players" that we have on the team that don't have a truly defined position, we are going to see all sorts of lineup variations. At best, you can maybe narrow it down to the most used lineups...
PG Dipo
SG Fournier
SF Harkless
PF Gordon
C Vucevic
PG Payton
SG Dipo
SF Harris
PF Frye
C Vucevic

Personally, I think our "need" for perimeter shooting is going to work itself out on its own...Harkless was 1 bad month away from being a 40% 3 pt shooter. Dipo has had time to put in work...I don't think he will be deadly but you won't be able to leave him alone. Harris continues to improve. Frye will be a huge help. I don't think Gordon is going to be needed.

in what way would we be terrible defensively with frye starting?Melvinlocker wrote:Blue_and_Whte wrote:I dont know about better, but after reading some articles about frye it appears that many belive his defense is a little underrated. Certainly thats not a very detailed analysis but i cant do the research at work. People see a 3pt shooting big man and assume he cant defend, hes at least a capable post defender.Smooth_E wrote:

I haven't looked up his synergy stuff, but I did finds some things on NBA.com and Draftexpress. Channing allowed only 52% shooting around the rim on 6.5 attempts by opponents. From what I can gather that is above average for PF's and about average for a good C. He is not a shot blocker per se, but doesn't get scored on easily. I would make the argument that he was Suns 2nd best rim protector behind Miles Plumlee.

I don't understand how people would think the Magic will be weak on the front line defensively when you have two big men with size while both can even defend other centers adequately. More like Twin Towers. Heck, Frye is longer than KOQ.

who? :| jk. I think BG will give us decent production as a back up as he'll be eager to prove that, he still has something left in the tank. As bad as he was with the hornets he can still shoot the ball which is really all we need him to do.LBPTarHeel27 wrote:LBPTarHeel27 wrote:BadMofoPimp wrote:

Payton has 7 assists already in the first half
ignore that. he is averaging 7. has 2 so far.

I don't know about you guys but the more I watch Gordon the more i'm convinced he is a SF not a PF. I really do hope the kid grows about inch or two and adds some serious weight.

It's not the Frye Vuc duo I'm worried about it's the trio with Tobias that scares me. We need more defense in that starting line up if Frye starts which is why I suggested starting Moe or AG with Toby as the 6th man

Gordon will be playing the 4, Harkless is probably the 3 off the bench. Ben Gordon is the shooter in this case.
Nicholson looks like he'll be the odd man out.
