Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
Hayward is getting offered the max since that’s what it would take to get him and the Hornets can afford it. It has nothing to do with whether or not we think he’s “worth it” or not. Cho has clearly decided that this is the move most likely to improve the team.
I’m not really worried about this move one way or the other. It makes sense to me because:
1. Hayward is clearly one of the guys Big Al wants. After seeing this year’s contract Al is going to opt out next year, regardless of how the Hornets do. If the team wants to keep him they need to make the big fella happy. In this case that means trying to sign Hayward.
2. Hayward clearly fits on this team. He has already proven that he has on the court chemistry with Al. His passing helps replace what the team lost with McBob & is a natural fit with Kemba. His outside scoring will create space that the team desperately needed last year. The Bobcat’s biggest weakness last year was offense and Hayward offers fixes for a lot of what ailed the team.
3. If the Jazz match it’s not the end of the world. There are still major names out there that the team can go after … and next year’s FA crop also looks really good so keeping some cap space isn’t a horrible idea. Clearly there are contingency plans.

My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

That's exactly how players end up 'bad contracts'. There's no excuse for paying a player above production value

...and I wouldn't recommend offering them a max-contract either. Maybe Bosh, because he's proven, and beyond just being proven, he's dispelled any adverse notion that he could lead a team to the playoffs from his days in Toronto

Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
I am not down for a SnT with Hayward. Unless it does not involve (kemba, mkg, zeller, jefferson or vonleh), but they can have anybody else.
I think we make the Jazz put the money where their mouth is. Of course they have been saying all along they would match no matter what any team offered. Hoping that no team would offer it, due to being afraid that they would have to match. Then when no team offers, Utah has the power to sign him for 12-13 per year rather than 16.
I understand Utah does not want to lose their franchise guy, for nothing...but they have Exum now. Exum is a guy who likes to have the ball in his hands, so Hayward may stunt his growth. If I were the Jazz I would role out with all my young guys and try to land another top pick next year. Having to pay Hayward the MAX to finish as a bottom 5 team in the West just does not make much sense with no real turn around in the near future.
Then if you are the Jazz, I think where Gordon wants to be has a big effect on whether or not they match. If Gordon comes to them and says I want to play on a winning team, make the playoffs and reunite with Big Al then Utah may be more reluctant to match. They do not want another Eric Gordon ordeal where player is resentful towards organization, not saying Hayward would be that type of guy, but still.

Cho has clearly decided that he can't draft for chit and has to do whatever it takes to bring in talent to save his job b/c he just ordered that ping pong table made of Italian marble and ivory.
My opinion.

Jazz fan here: I don't know if this is good new or bad news for you guys. But I'm quite sure the Jazz are going to match your offer even though it would be over paying him.

This is all a big deal about nothing and has been from the start. Utah was never letting Hayward go. We'll be back to square 1 on Sunday.

If we sign and trade to do this, we better not include Vonleh, and I hope it doesn't include Hyphen. Frankly we need to keep Zeller too, but I can live with it if we also ship out Hendo and go get Lance.
Otherwise, Utah, please match at 12:01AM July 10th.

I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I must admit I don't know if it's good or bad news for Utah if they match. they gave Favors a big deal and then (reportedly) threw him into offers for a top 2 pick. now they've got to make a determination on Hayward at an awkward time in their rebuilding cycle. do you think Snyder as coach could unlock more development from him?

Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
I love and hate this signing.
Love it because it shows MJ is willing to spend for free agents to make the Hornets better. He answers our need for SG and can play the point for short stretches. His stats are decent all around but his efficiency is alarming. I suppose his efficiency will increase by not being a first option.
Hate it because I don't think he is worth that much money. The problem with Hayward is that he mainly shoots jumpers and rarely drives. I'd hate to sign a primarily jump shooter with average efficiency for 15m a year. I'd figure he'd be 3rd option behind Al and Kemba.

Thank you! If you guys match the offer, I hope he works well for you and lives up to the contract.

Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
+4 wins plus the extra win or two from the other drafting and signings would put us 3rd in the east over toronto last season
investigate Adam Silver

Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
how many players averaged 16.2ppg 5.2apg 5.1rpg 1.4spg in 2014?
sure he not shoot well last season (.413) but has shot .485, .456, .435 in other seasons!
and career .365 trey shooter!
i'm sold, and i pray to everyone that Jazz let Hayward come to us

Re: The Gordon Hayward Thread
Last year the Bobcats played the Jazz twice. In those 2 games, Hayward had...
12 points on 3-for-11 shooting
...and...
9 points on 3-for-10 shooting un-respectively...
...MAX-CONTRACT PLAYER EVERYBODY
FYI, Henderson matched or outscored him in both games
