It's a lowball, but certainly big enough that he wouldn't risk signing the QO either. He has no reason not to wait things out though, hoping a team comes after him with a max or near max offer after missing out on the Lebron's, Melo's and Boshes. It's not like Detroit will pull the offer or lessen it as some sort of vindictive punishment for Monroe not signing it right away. Basically this offer would set Monroe's worst case scenario now.

We cant give him that 5 year deal because that is reserved for Dre!!! 12 mil a year is a good deal for Monroe but dont be stupid and give him the 5 years and then we cant give Dre the extra year on his deal.

I don't like giving him 5 years... But if that's what it takes for him to accept the 12 mil/year offer, then okay.

what's the rule on that? you can only have one 5 year contract at a time?
so, theoretically, we'd have to wait until moose's deal ran out before we could offer dre a 5 year deal?

IF that's the way the rule works, then i wouldn't mind giving monroe the 5 year deal, and i'm sure dre wouldn't either. dre will get paid eventually, i'm sure he knows that.

Only one at a time on your roster for guys coming off of their rookie deals. So when Monroe and Drummond sign their 3rd contracts both could get 5 years.

What? Dre has two years left on his deal before we negotiate with him which actually might be as soon as after next season. If you give Monroe 5 years then we can offer Drummond no more then a 4 year deal.

If only one five year deal off rookie contract as I've read it explained than there is no way this is a real offer AT ALL and the author/source has been exposed as a hack.

That's probably fair market value for Monroe, but recent trends suggest he can probably get an offer sheet that pays around that much over FOUR years.

So yeah....

I actually wasn't aware of the 5-year reserved rule, so we can probably rule this entire thing out as BS anyway.

We can only give 1 player the 5 year max contract. We could offer Greg a 5/60 deal because its less than the max.

I've always hoped we could get Monroe at 12 a year.. anything more would be disappointing.

Not true.

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q59

Rookie scale contracts may be extended for up to four seasons beyond the last option season in the contract, bringing the total contract length to five seasons. Teams can also select one player (called their "Designated Player") who can receive a five-year extension, bringing the total contract length to six seasons. A team can have at most one player on its roster whom they have designated for a longer extension, plus at most one player designated by another team whom they acquired in trade.

It seems that since Monroe is a RFA, it wouldn't be a contract extension, but we'd be signing him as a free agent. If we would have extended him last season it would have applied, but since he was allowed to reach free agency, albeit restricted free agency, the one-5-yr-max-off-rookie-contract-extension clause doesn't apply.

Does the above apply in this case? Technically we are not extending Monroe. He is a free agent. His contract would not be 6 years -- only 5.

EDIT: I didn't see Kilo's reply above. Yeah, what he said :D

I'm not sure, but this is how I interpreted the above snippet as well.

That would be awesome, Theres so many different rules and stipulations in the CBA but if we can give both of them 5 year deals then thats great news. I would be more then happy giving Monroe 5/60 as long as it doesnt affect Dre.

As long as we sign him and keep shopping him (quietly), it's all good with me.

Dude isn't a 4. That's just the way it is.

I doubt this is true. One of the major sticking points in the Harden deal was OKC couldn't give Harden a 5th year. If what you are saying is true, they could have just let him hit restricted free agency and gave him the 5th year.
