I just e-mailed my "source", who's basically a friend of a friend of MLSE and some local journalists, and he responded thusly:

I really don't think it is happening...... but - I was invited to a special Raptors announcement at Real Sports tomorrow..... I am sure that is just for announcing the training schedule for their new players :-)

If I had a chance to speak to Lebron, I'd convince him to play for us I promise.

I just said to my wife "Hey babe, there's an actual rumour that Lebron might sign w Toronto".

My wife replied "WHATEVER! Gimme a break."

This is a joke... even my wife knows it(she knows most of her ball through me). My almost-2-year-old son would probably have said it was BS too if he spoke better English.

In the remote chance that this does happen, I hope we trade him to the Cavs for Wiggins.

James is the biggest story going in the NBA.

This would be leaked so quick if it was a possibility, IMO.

Woj has connections to LBJ entourage.

Miami got LeBron from Cleveland in sign and trade for a draft pick.Miami has no leverage. Expirings plus or pick, knicks pick would Get be enough

Yes, Miami does have leverage: they could simply say "no, if you want to go play for Toronto, go sign for the $10 million that they have available". That would mean that Bron would be out about 10.5 million bucks in salary. So they do have leverage.
Cleveland could have said, "no, if you want to go to Miami go sign for 4 years instead of 5." No team does this, better to not piss off players and agents as well as get assets return.

Even if Miami said no, our team is full of expirings, can trade them plus picks to Philly or Milwaukee. If LeBron chose Toronto it would happen.

The bigger issue is convincing Lebron Toronto is the best place for him.

I dont know McCowns reasons for thinking this, and I can't believe he said it, but...

We have the full MLE to offer, and a glaring need at the 3. If LBJ were to sign for the MLE, we would instantly become favourites in the east.

Surely Lebron can see that our team as is + Lebron = NBA finals.

Maybe we've told him to take the MLE for 1 year, if we don't win/you dont like living in Toronto take a max elsewhere after 1 year or if we do win or u want to stay we'll give you a 5 year max no questions...

What, really, is LBJ's opportunity cost here? 14 mil divided over 6 years? plus with all of his endorsements, I doubt that even matters...

just thinking out loud...

If LeBron wanted to come here we would dump our expirings, give him max. Would be no problem.

If that ever happened, all those years of "stars" leaving us and us having to overpay guys to come here would be forgotten. If you really analyze each team based on potential now and the near future, the two teams that have the most potential imo are the bulls/raptors. Notice, I said near future and now so that doesn't count for the sixers/cavs etc Lebron wouldn't want to sign in Chicago for obvious reasons, so that really makes us the primary option if Lebron and his agents knew the situation. If only we had enough money though... We have both the PG/C spots locked up with borderline stars, plus a star in Demar, a lot of potential in Ross/Bruno and other nice role players. This is all based on what you stated and not a sign and trade.

Yup.

If the Raptors packaged Fields with Ross and Hayes with Knicks Pick, they'd both be gone tomorrow.

Getting rid of expirings if you're willing to give up good assets along with them isn't that difficult.
