Humphries made a name for himself in the basketball world with his rugged play in the paint for the then rebuilding Nets four years ago. He averaged a double-double in both seasons in New Jersey, and made the move over to Brooklyn on a two year deal worth $24 million dollars. But he struggled in the first year of his deal and was later told by interim head coach P.J. Carlesimo that he'd be left out of the rotation in favor of Mirza Teletovic and Reggie Evans. He was shipped off the Boston that summer in the Paul Pierce/Kevin Garnett trade.

He reinvented himself in Boston as a high-energy big man that gobbles up rebounds. He led the Celtics in rebounding rate and in player efficiency rating last season, but more surprisingly, shot a scorching 45 percent from midrange. Over 55 percent of his offense came on jump shots from that area per NBA.com's stats page, which became a major boon and a reliable safety valve for Rajon Rondo as he made his way back from an ACL tear.

What makes him so reliable throughout the years is his willingness to play both the four and the five position. He's undersized at 6'9", but he's extremely physical and does as good a job as any in carving out rebounding position. He's an underrated defender that uses his athleticism to contest shots, but you do have to hide him in pick and roll coverages by keeping him in the lane. He doesn't have the quickness to contain ball handlers and is often slow to recover.

And he is a bit of a wild card in free agency. His best years were in New Jersey for a piss-poor Nets team, and when he finally cashed in with his two-year deal, his play stumbled. I wouldn't exactly associate the word "rugged" with Kris Kardashian. He's "rugged" like Orlando Bloom is "rugged".

I have no problem with Humphries on-the-cheap, but I know Ernie's game, he will take the cheapest of the leftovers when he hasn't already panic-signed...not-sure KH's value in FA.

I am okay with Humphries being signed, but I think DeJuan Blair at a fraction of what Humphries will cost is a much better option.

The attributes you've listed would make Humphries a welcome starter for the inevitable Nene injury.

He would likely be an upgrade over Booker. Better mid range shooter, not as good on offensive boards so they are a wash on offense. He is better suited to defend other PFs, however, and doesn't get scored on in the post like Booker does. Signing him does make it near impossible to get a stretch 4 tho, he can shoot but doesn't extend to 3pt land.

And he will cost the full MLE.

I doubt it. We talked about it here, but there was never anything I saw that said the two teams actually discussed any deals. Brooklyn ended up including Humphries in a deal for a higher profile package from Boston, so I'm guessing "Nene-for-Humphries" was never actually on the table.

Only if he comes cheap.

Not a bad PF to have on the bench. This just seems so.... meh. I mean, what does he bring that Booker doesnt? Hes a rich man's Booker/Gooden. If Booker and Gooden will come back and cost less than Hump, then why bother bringing in Hump at all? The extra roster space?

Only if it's a 2-year deal. I absolutely do not want a long-term MLE contract going out to a backup - certainly not if we fail in resigning Ariza. Without Ariza, this team is in a holding pattern. We're just not good enough to be looking for final pieces like Kris Humphries. We still need to add one or two core players and we're going to need that cap room to make it happen.

Wow have you ever watched humpries- not only does he suck but he isn't the type of player I want to cheer for. I prefer booker over this clown- booker is tough and plays hard- kris is a gump!

Even with Ariza this team is in a holding pattern. Had Rose been healthy last year we don't make it out of the first round. Charlotte is improved. Atlanta is improved. We'll be lucky to even make the playoffs this coming season. The solution has been identified by you and others for years and that is EG must go and a new, talented GM needs the freedom and authority to construct a team for long term success.
