I think there's a racial element to this as well that many people don't want to get into because it threatens their privilege. Places with overwhelmingly white fan bases are always the ones that are considered "real fans" and "hardcore". Meanwhile cities with more diverse fan bases (Miami and Los Angeles) are considered simple, uneducated, fair-weather, etc. The Knicks are only an exception because so many members of the media grew up and still are Knicks fans.
Believe me, if the best player in the NBA left Oklahoma City or Dallas without thanking the fans he'd have hell to pay in the media. But that's the way it is. And before the post-racial crowd comes jumping in to deny reality, I've lived in Miami and Los Angeles. There are many, many seriously hardcore fans in both places that frighten me in their loyalty and ferocity. So no, there is no basis for this stereotype.
A further example, notice how the media fawns over the Oklahoma City crowds and how rabid and loyal they are. The team's been around for less than a decade, and I've dozens and dozens of article praising them. Yet, in Oakland where I live today and where fans have been committed and loyal through waaaay more adversity are rarely given the same kind of positive publicity.

This is total bs. I'm so tired of the hero worshipping of "alpha dogs" in basketball. What is with the obsession with **** who try to posture all the time and flex their "masculinity". Why do people have such hard ons for people who treat everyone around them like **** in order to get ahead? Why is it better to be ruthlessly competitive rather than cooperative and collaborative? Every "alpha" I've ever met in my life was secretly deeply insecure and borderline paranoid often with something hidden in their closet. I don't hate a guy like LeBron he doesn't try to step on others to get ahead and I find that admirable.
What are you talking about? I don't think you understand the alpha/beta distinction. Being an alpha has nothing to do with stepping on people or being a dick. It's just about being your own man and leading others, not being led. Kobe isn't an alpha because he's ruthless. He's an alpha because he doesn't have a posse pulling the strings of his life.
LeBron got led to Miami by Wade, then steered back to Cleveland by Maverick Carter and Rich Paul. He's weak-minded. If LeBron wanted to go back to Cleveland, fine. But hearing that it's been Paul and Carter pushing him that way for 3 years? That's weak. This is the second-biggest decision of his career. He needs to own it, not let other people influence him.
When Kobe was demanding the Lakers upgrade, demanding more from his teammates, feuding with Shaq, do you think it was because someone he knew from his AAU years was whispering in his ear? Hell no. Kobe does what Kobe does because it's what Kobe wants to do.
