Again, another pitcher that tried the rest/rehab approach unsuccessfully. Better off just getting the surgery done in the beginning it seems.

Or at least ask Adam Lind's mom to diagnose it.

Dan Jansen is worth keeping an eye on in Bluefield. He was a cold-weather high school draftee last year who was considered something of a steal in the 16th round, and last season he posted stellar walk totals in a smallish sample and not a lot else. Repeating the level, his average is poor but that seems to be a product of bad BABIP as much as anything else, and he hit his 2nd HR to go with 3 doubles in only 64 plate appearances.

He's a pretty big kid for a catcher, and was considered very likely to stick there. Pop, patience and a good defensive profile behind the plate can take someone a long way.

more good news on the pitcher front

[tweet]https://twitter.com/stoltz_baseball/status/487024692037832704[/tweet]

He threw four innings, 1R, 0ER, 2H 1BB, 4K

Also, nice outing by little Miguel Burgos, channelling his inner Marcus Stroman

3IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 4K

Matt Smoral putting in some work tonight.

Four innings and only one walk thus far.

In addition to Jansen, Urena seems to be flying under the radar a bit. The numbers are solid and it's worth remembering he's only about four months past turning 18. He's showing some pop this year which as well.

Freddy Rodriguez, one of our IFAs last July, is also off to a nice start with the GCL club.

A couple of weeks back on the Around the Nest podcast, Bluefield's broadcaster Kevin Fitzgerald said he'd be back soon. I believe it was termed lower body injury...recalling from two weeks ago so my memory is hazy. Anyhow, that was a couple weeks ago and he's still not back.

Thanks! That does not bode well but ya never know he may come back and mash yet...

This is great news! Osuna has long been my favourite prospect. He has "Bartolo Colon" written all over him, IMO.

Oh, and he just turned 19.

Bartolo Colon has a career 45 WAR and is still pitching(and doing it well) at the age of 41, he's managed his body incredibly well one would have to say based on the results alone.

Dwight Smith and Matt Dean continue their hot streaks and each have a HR tonight. 7 for Dean and 6 for Smith.

Smith was slashing .500/.564/1.064 over the past 10 heading in to tonight.
Dean is slashing .395/.600/.995 over past 10

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Miguel Castro has just about earned a late audition in Lansing. As things stand, he has an ERA of 2.54, a K/9 of 9.2 and BB/9 of 3.2...I'd expect a 3-4 more starts in Vancouver and an August tryout in full-season in preparation for next year.

Late news: Ryan McBroom with a homer (4) and double for Vancouver. 3RBIs. Now hitting .322.

I hope he makes the majors, just to see the wisecracks about his name.

Angel Perdomo is raising some eyebrows in the GCL. Five innings of one-hit, one-walk relief with 6 strikeouts has pushed him up to 24 Ks in 18 innings, He's a big, big kid who only made his ways stateside this year (his age 20 season) because he had naught for control, but he seems to be locating.

Lane Thomas' good start continues apace, as well. He's up to .292/.387/.415 after a 3 for 5 day where he fell a homer short of the cycle. He did commit his second error at third (in very limited chances) though, and is probably going to be a work in progress there for quite some time.

If he turns into an elite power hitter we can call him Ryan McBoom.

“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Don't think this has been posted yet but Norris (#25) and Pompey (#47) have cracked the Baseball America top 50 mid-season prospect list:

Andy Burns is turning things around in New Hampshire. He got off to an awful start, hitting in the low .200s through the end of May, but he's piling up extra-base hits at the moment.

Strikeouts are still something of a concern, but if he continues hitting like this for the next couple weeks, a late-season promotion to Buffalo likely beckons.
