I think what he means is fall for the over-hype. McGee (Bball IQ), Vesely (Skills) and Porter (Strength) all have legitimate reasons they didn't succeed out of the gate.
Porter may eventually get there - was the same argument for McGee and Vesely.

I suspect last year's draft is going to yet again be one that we regret years from now.
The 5 blocks were impressive - I don't think he will ever be able to play C - but he definitely moves well enough to play PF. Guess he won't need to play much C with Embiid.

He can easily play C with a defense that's based around trapping, doubling, and strong rotations like Miami. The only thing Noel sucks at is 1 on 1 post defense and with the right team defense in place it should never come to that.

Yep, but there are very few defensives like Miami's - I think he would be much better off as a PF.

Like I said before. I am hearing the same excuses we all made for Jan Vesely. Not gonna fall for this again.
Vesely and Porter aren't the only skinny guys to play in the NBA.
I don't understand what "fall for this again" means. That he's going to be a stiff like Jan? That he can't shoot a FT? That he has no semblance of an offensive game? If you watched him at G-town, he was a pretty damn good player. Close to being great. Doubt he'll be an All-Star because he lacks explosiveness and a great handle but with a little more strength and time, he will be pretty good. Now people keep pointing to Kevin Durant because he's the second-best player and he's skinny but he also has 30 foot range and incredible length. He'd likely be the best player in the game if he added another 10-15lbs and decided to work on a post game.
I compare him with Vesely, because of the whole he never got a chance (he sucked when he did, unlike the fantastical "flashes of brilliance" crap that I'm reading on here), not strong enough, hasn't shown that he can be a consistent shooter (I think his shooting in his last year in college was a fluke).
Anyway, this is all my opinion. He seems like a great kid and I hope it works out for him, but I still wish we hadn't drafted him.

Re: Otto Porter
ugh
stop comparing Vesely to Porter
Ves got 18 minutes a game his first year and it would have been higher if he didn't take him out of games by fouling at such a high rate.
Vesely got a shot. He had some tools but literally couldn't stay on the court.
Porter didnt get a real chance at all. And he DID look good in spots. Made quick decisions. Ran the floor better than Ariza or Web. Actually moved off the ball. Played the passing lanes well.
The only thing he was awful at was making his limited open shots.

Well, we'll just have to wait this one out. I mean, there are posters on this board who kept making excuses for Jan, even till the day he got traded. Let's hope he can do more than run the floor well and have a high BBall IQ in his second year.
My stance always is; the coaches see these guys play in practice all the time. If they think he is gonna be as good as you think, we'll either be hearing about a trade involving Webster or show no interest in bringing back Ariza.

Why should I trust Wittmans talent assessment? He's a low tier coach. He told Love not to shoot three pointers. He thought Eric Maynor should run our bench for a month. He's never once ran a small ball lineup despite the fact that Wall desperately needs one.
I don't really trust Randys opinion.

I don't think you need to trust Randy so much as understand how his opinions sway what we do... who plays, on court schemes and execution and to some extent who/how we draft.

Well the main difference is that you can not really make some one not be a dumb a** (McGee)
and you can't infuse natural talent into someone (Jan)
You can get stronger and you can learn how to shoot if the talent is there. Porter has talent, good IQ, good skills, good frame, and he has the drive. I think if he had not gotten hurt last year he would have played a lot more than he had, they brought him on slow and felt no need to rush him. We had Ariza and Web, we could afford to bring him along slow like we did. I am seeing a ton of, "we should have drafted Noel" Please, there were very good reasons for not drafting noel, and those are still valid. I have faith in Porter, I hope the team does as well!

Legit reasoning. He could get stronger - then again he might not get strong enough? With his strength issue - I don't think he would have played many more minutes than he did last year.
I think there are really good reasons not to have drafted Porter - at least as many as not to have drafted Noel.
I wasn't one that advocated for Noel, I advocated to trade down (and lots have pointed out that it is easier to say that do).
Either way, we need to hope that he makes a huge jump this year or we are hosed.

Re: Otto Porter
why do people keep talking about Porters strength
guys have been as thin as him and made an impact in their first few years in the league--he didn't start because he had vets over him that had ORTGs of 110+ with a coach who had a mandate of playoffs or update the resume
it's simple as that

Re: Otto Porter
Even if healthy, I honestly don't think Porter would have played that much last season. He's not as good as the two vets in front of him. This was definitely not the team he should have been drafted to. I actually feel bad for this kid, if we resign Ariza on a ridiculous long term contract.

I believe in otto. too much basketball awareness and too many good things said about him from people behind the scenes. martell says Otto got crazy patience. gortat keeps saying good things about him.
I really like him as a prospect

Actually it is not that simple ... strength and athleticism do matter in the NBA. It takes many players time to get used to the speed and power of the NBA players - and some never adjust. And if Ariza returns he will still have a player with an ORTG of 110+
He could very well adjust... I think we all hope - but it isn't a slam dunk.

Otto sounding a lot more grown up after just one year. I think he will mature quickly.

So apparently Otto doesn't like heights or being on water, is claustrophobic and doesn't know who Cher is.
What an absolute bust.

well he seems a little less nervous this year...last eason he was like Kwame nervous...not exactly a Rocket Scientist..cmon what kind of rock do you live under to not know who Cher is?
Rice is a bigger dummy. How do you grow up as Glen Rices son and be that much of a dummy. He musta had the money to go to the best schools.
Rice= Nick Young..theyre basically the same guy.
As for Porter we know he'll never be a star. I just dont see any explosiveness in him....takes him a long time to get up to speed when he runs. I do think he can be a nice peice though..may a 10-15 pts a night a 5 rebounds type of guy Tayshawn Prince i think is his ceiling...but thats kind of exactly what we need.
We need him to be a consistent 3 pt shooter.

Players need compliments, nick young would thrive next to kobe as a 3rd scorer. He was pretty good as a 6th man last year.
rice is a competitor some guys jus need to be thrust into a situation and allowed to make mistakes (beal) he wouldve been considered a bust if wall was healthy and the office staff was in the position they was jus in...he sucked up to all star break
we jus let porter start with rice backing him up until webster gets healthy, keep our space to make a trade with nene and take on some salary. Maybe get a backup pf like humpries.
Don't handicap ourself with an ariza or deng when we have a sf on a good contract ready to play
Pay your beals....or its lights out!!!
Bron, Bosh, Wade is like Mike, Hakeem, barkley...3 top 5 picks from same draft
mike, hakeem and Barkley on the same team!!!!
