Strikeouts are still something of a concern, but if he continues hitting like this for the next couple weeks, a late-season promotion to Buffalo likely beckons.

Feel like taking a stab at this? Who is the best prospect of these three shortstops: Urena, Barretto or Lugo. Barreto has the best OBP, but Urena is coming on strong the last two weeks, and Lugo has been pretty consistent. Sizewise, Barretto is the shortest by about four inches. Lugo has fallen off the radar a bit, but he seems like a solid candidate for Dunedin next season.

My opinion is Barreto. He's holding his own in a league where virtually everyone is several years older than him.

Hmm. Ultimately, I don't think that Barreto is a shortstop, but I'm in love with his bat...I'd have him as the best of the three because I'd expect him to be a pretty solid center fielder if that transition becomes necessary.

Urena's getting really intriguing, because he's the only one of the three who doesn't feature questions concerning his future position, and he's hitting much better than anticipated, and showing some unexpected pop.

Not much to choose between the three, but I'd have Barreto as the best of the three overall, Urena as the best of the three as a future shortstop. Nothing against Lugo in that calculation, more that he's currently in-between offensively and defensively.

I know many observers predicted that he'd be a super utility type guy, and with his splits being the way they are, he might be a really valuable guy on the bench that can play a number of positions and hit lefties well. He's really the type of player the Jays could have used this year if he was a little more advanced.

I agree that it sounds a little iffy whether Barreto will stick at SS. As long as he keeps hitting though, there will be a spot for him. Dieferson Barreto's not looking too bad either.

It's too bad Lugo's not hitting with much power this year. Especially, when you consider the lack of walks.

Pompey went 2-4 in the futures game and Norris picked a clean inning with 1 k. Jimenez was 0-1

Surprised that they haven't given him more time at 2B. It's the path of least resistance if he can handle the position, and would make him a more useful bench player if it comes down to it.

Pompey turned on 97 mph from Robert Stephenson on his second hit.

Everyone said AA would be the test to see just how far his bat has come. If he can handle one of AA best pitching prospects, then that has to bode well.

Agreed. Surely, if he can handle SS then he can work in at 2B too. You'd figure they'd want to give him some reps there to at least get him comfortable playing there if necessary.

Another SS-to-2B conversion candidate, Shane Opitz, appears to be making his first start of the season, in the GCL, presumably after injury rehab. He is playing 2B today. Last season, he played some 2B (as well as SS, 1B and 3B). He had a very nice season at Lansing/Dunedin in 2013, hitting above .300 at both levels. Could be an interesting utility player with that kind of versatility.

Chris King on Osuna: 15 pitches - all fastballs. Mechanics sound. Sporting low-effort delivery hr's always had. Locating both sides of plate. Neither reluctant or hesitant to attack hitters. Came away most impressed w/ his body. Looked very fit, strong, comfortable with his current build. It's obvious he took conditioning seriously during time off, ans that speaks volumes about where his head is.

Yeah, picking up a couple of hits on sharp liners against Stephenson and Giolito is a nice days work.

Sickels had his mid-season top 75 list posted today.

Jays on the list:

22) Aaron Sanched (pre-season 29)
I still have worries about his command but he’s held his own well enough to maintain a spot in the 20s.

35) Daniel Norris, LHP, Toronto Blue Jays (98): Has made huge progress refining his mechanics and command, and he always had the stuff.

63) Dalton Pompey, OF, Blue Jays (NR): Grade C pre-season though I respected his tools, speed, and defense. I wasn’t sure about the bat but he’s shown a lot more this season.

Now that everyone's posting their mid-season lists, who would you put on your mid-season top 10 for the Jays system?

Smoral still striking out a pile of batters. in 3 IP he had 5 K's and just 2 BB's. Ran in to trouble to start the 4th after Urena made an error. Smoral then gave up 2 runs on back to back doubles and his night was done 2 ER, and 6 hits.

Daniel Norris

Jeff Hoffman
Roberto Osuna

Max Pentecost
Dalton Pompey
Aaron Sanchez

Franklin Barreto
Sean Reid Foley
Miguel Castro
Richard Urena

The guys within tiers are interchangeable IMO. Not bad, its lacking in super elite prospects but there's a lot of depth.

I went with the same tiered system as Avenger. That said, Pompey and Norris are clearly a cut above the rest, but the others are certainly debatable.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
