This Article is Thought Provoking

Long-Time reader. First time poster. Been following this knee-jerk of a Magic board since around 2000-2001.

I was initially not overly high on either of our picks and felt the Magic would have been well served picking Exum at 4 and Hood at 12. That said Payton has fantastic potential and we finally have a pass-first PG as demonstrated in SL. I am optimistic of his development long-term.

This article from the Boston Globe is thought provoking for those who feel A Gordon will develop offensively. I see him as a rim-crasher for now but I will leave it at this.....http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/06/22/choice-nba-position-will-crucial-with-aaron-gordon/bm1DkRBEpAaMAgDPadDpsN/story.html

Decent article. I personally don't agree with the Martin or Faried comparisons. I think AG's skill-set has a bit more depth to it.

I really like the Josh Smith (more intelligent version), and the Kawhi Leonard comparisons. His skill-set is more closer to those two. He's a tweener and always will be, in my opinion.

That's a pre-draft scouting report but it really is scary to turn this decision over to out coaching staff. Hope try don't pick the wrong position for him long-term. The article mentions he might have to play SF until he gets bigger so we won't be able to judge their intention on game one unless they spell out their plan for him.

Yes you are correct it is pre-draft scouting I didn't point that out. Sorry.
That said there is some layer of truth here.

These are nba execs?! How about the ball handling, defense, and passing weve seen thus far? Horrible comps. Shawn Marion is a better comparison, Kawahi Leonard..kenyon Martin? Really?

Is Shawn Marion the only tweener who succeeded?

He's definitely a power forward. His first year he needs to focus on defense and crashing the boards. That's how he'll have an impact until his offensive game (hopefully) comes along.

I never saw Marion as a tweener...just a SF that played PF in a Mike D'Antoni offense.

Ok. Who did then? Because recent history doesnt point to a high success rate on gordon. Not unless he devots on solely playing a pf or sf, but not both.

Shawn Marion once was 5th place in MVP voting one year in his prime.

I will take that over Ginobili.

And, I been a lurker since the 80's on RealGM before I started posting! 8-)

Wasn't really arguing the point but now that you ask...Lamar Odom comes to mind. There definitely aren't many but It depends on the definition of tweener. Typically people talk about being a SF/PF...if that is the case, aren't the best two players in the league "tweeners"? KD and LBJ play a lot of time at both spots.

Off the top of my head: Gerald Wallace, Josh Smith, Jerome Kersey, Grant Hill, Scottie Pippen, Kawhi Leonard, Andre Iguodala, Andrei Kirilenko, Luol Deng, Shawn Marion, Julius Irving. All of them would be considered tweeners in today's league coming out of college (or in Andrei's case, an international league).

All had questionable jumpers and only a small portion of them developed their jumpers into weapons. I'd say they all had a pretty good success rate. Heck Gerald Wallace shot less than 60% from the line in college and Iggy recently had a season in the low 60s. There is definitely a precedent for players in Gordon's mold having a high success rate, even if it took most of them a while to develop.

Gordon will be fine because he gets it and he's in a situation where he can thrive. High character, hard worker and he's surrounded by guys who are also like that and have skills that he needs to develop and can learn from. This is why Henny is a genius for putting together this roster. He knows how important it is to make sure the young guys are successful.

I thought the article was ok. Not up in arms about it. Faried and Martin are decent comparisons to start off with knowing he can be more if he reaches his potential.

I did a Google image search for "tweener" and all I got were pictures of Lane Garrison.
