Mike Miller signs with the Cavs

Post#1 » by thinktellectual » Tue Jul 15, 2014 10:05 pm

I **** kept saying that Miller shouldn't have been amnestied.
I was actually 100% sure that the Heat wouldn't do it, because it ran against everything they are (or should be) about. Loyalty, family etc.

I understand 17 mil is 17 mil, but I think overall Haslem, Wade, Bosh, Miller and Bron gave up more than 17 million. And that's just the money they saved Arison. Bibby alone gave up 6 mil from his pocket to play half a season for the Heat.

When the players make financial sacrifices, I think the owners should AT LEAST match them.

I think Arison is a GREAT owner overall, but he screwed the pooch on that one.
Doesn't mean Lebron would have stayed. Maybe his heart really is in Cleveland, as weird as that might be.
But that move didn't help at all.

meh. He barely played down here. We paid him a lot of money to basically just play in one finals game a year. I don't know what the deal was with his health while down here, or why he stayed healthy while in Memphis.

I only regret amnestying miller cause he would have gotten minutes after Lebron left and we only really amnestied him so we would have flexibility to sign better players this summer for Lebron.

Cavs are paying him more than we did though. No discount even though we pay the bulk of the salary this year. I wish him to be as happy and healthy.....as he was here 8-)

Players taking paycuts does not save owners money. Stop repeating that. Whether 4 mil goes to Wade, or the same 4 mil goes to an extra role player - the owner still pays that 4mil.

Players taking paycuts is just to have better teammates. It doesn't save the owner anything.

I like Mike Miller a ton...so whatever makes him happy I'm cool with. Too bad it won't result in a title for him.

You know if we didn't amnesty Miller, he would be 6-7mil on our books... We wouldn't have been able to sign all these guys we have now

I'm sure Lebron would have left anyway and if miller was still with us, we wouldn't have been able to sign Deng

Or give Wade his dues even if it's still a paycut

We can now develop guys and not rely on older guys so much and wait for 2016

It is what it is. It sucks but who knew 4 years ago all of this would happen lol. Miller health isn't even guaranteed

yeah, after luxury taxes and accounting for replacement player salaries, waiving Miller saved Mickey $13M. And that's with the Joel Anthony trade. If they hadn't been able to swing that, it's $20M.

Of course, that's $20M Mickey would've happily spent if it meant that Lebron stayed, but who knows if that would've been the case? I doubt it.

No, Miller situation was different. We were in the tax zone and the repeater tax is killer. I'm not talking about exceptions like that situation.

I'm talking normally. Let's say the cap is a made up number, say $60 mil. Wade takes a paycut of $6mil even though he deserved the max contract. The front office now gets Shane Battier (example) to add to the roster with the $6mil. But if Wade didn't take a paycut, that 6mil was still being spent. On wade, or on battier, the owner was still paying it. So paycuts are only to allow teams to add players within the salary cap.... which is a sustainable way of keeping a team together ..

Going over the cap and into the tax is not a long term sustainable team, because of the way the new CBA was written with the new repeater tax.

But when operating within the cap... makes no difference to owner if 6mil goes to wade, or 6mil goes to battier. It doesn't save him money. But the players are helped by having better teammates.

If you want to criticize Arison... do it with another line of reasoning. Such as, the big 3 brought a lot of wealth to the Heat. Merchandise, ticket sales, and franchise valuation. Arison could have spent the $17 mil to keep the players happy. But the problem is, at the time, Miller was completely ineffective. ALWAYS INJURED, and then the Tax issue would be even worse the next season because Repeater Tax gets worse and worse.

I had high expectations for Miller when he signed but for the most part he was invisible. Consider that in 3 years Battier played 4843 and Miller played 2490 minutes. It's a shame that Miller gets so much talk and Battier is basically forgotten...

As far as the Lebron side I really don't think it would have had any impact, Lebron wanted to go to Cleveland Mike Miller wasnt going to change that.

Agreed about the Miller/Battier dynamic. The funny thing is I think a LOT of the love Miller gets is purely from his game 5 against OKC, but we probably win that game in a blowout even without his 3's. And I think if him and Battier swapped places (so Battier has the game 5 against OKC and Miller the game 7 that Battier had against the Spurs), its Battier who gets more love from this fanbase.

I'd love to see us add Shane to the coaching staff or something, not sure if he's interested in that but I think he'd be great at it.
