Bill Simmons Is Changing The NBA

Post#1 » by KyletheDingbat » Wed Jul 16, 2014 5:13 am

Just read this article on Silver:

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/stor ... son-starts

"Silver spoke of several changes and proposals. He announced that the NBA's replay review system will be aided by a replay center in Secaucus, New Jersey. Silver also floated the idea of a televised NBA awards show, and a midseason tournament."

Every one of those ideas has been stated at some point by Simmons. The replay center has been spoken of by a few people to be clear, but the awards show and tournament seem pretty much Bill's ideas. The tournament in question, Simmons readers know, is the Entertaining as Hell tournament, though I'm unsure if he intended it to be at midseason.

Anyways I'm sure there will be a lot of Simmons bashing and defending in this thread, but I think it's pretty cool that a fan rose from nothing to getting, potentially, some of his more outlandish ideas implemented.

He is still a douche who is biased and hold grudges against teams and is nothing more really then a fan who read message boards and got a job at espn.

I don't know if I'd give him credit for these things, considering they've been popular topics for years now
but Bill Simmons definitely has influence and is respected in NBA circles, you can't deny that. He's hit the jackpot as an NBA junkie

mid season tournament is a horrible idea. I cant believe the nba is seriously considering it. ill be one of the first to hate on him. arrogant douche. if he was humble about himself and his sports teams i would definitely be one of the first to get his back but he is an annoying yuppie. he has a huge platform and waste it pushing garbage out there because he is either biased or too stoopid to realize how ignorant he is. I understand he has a depth of knowledge about the history of the nba but THATS IT and thats not what he does. What he does is put out ignorance (as viewed by his horrible NFL point spread prediction record) because hes a frail little unathlethic wimp he never understood what team sports mean or what values are important.

there's a difference between mildly entertaining and informative. I find Bill Simmons to be as entertaining as Sarah Palin, in the sense that I cannot wait to hear what junk comes out of both their mouthes. However, I also find him to be as informed as Palin, which is to say, less so than a Kindergartner would be. The only column Simmons writes that I regularly read is his football picks mailbag column, which he doesn't even write every week.

another thing about Simmons is I hate his bull politics and Obama references and **** in his articles as well as the stuff, alot of it not really sports talk, pushed on his Grantland site. im not going to get sidetracked in politics but if I was lucky enough to get my dream job in sports I wouldn't be making snide ignorant political jokes. You might disagree with my politics which is the point, if I was writing for them, which they would let me do if they had any sense, I would keep my SPORTS articles about SPORTS (which is something I enjoy to GET AWAY from political talk in the first place). ESPN as a whole has been bad about this since Disney bought them and Obama got elected but Simmons is one of the pack leaders there.

NO CHANCE IN HELL as Vince McMahon would say. im not here to toot my own horn and im not some mma fighter but im 29, 6 feet tall and lean, been in plenty of scraps, not intimidated by anyone, wrestled in high school. wrestled and boxed with guys much bigger and more athletic than me in college for fun. im not superman but Im more than capable of holding my own and Simmons would be NO match.

Whats the point of a midseason tournament? Guaranteed playoff seeding? Wild card?

I don't mind him, he can be a doucher, homerish, and unprofessional at times. But he's a hell of a lot better than hacks like Bucher, Broussard, etc.

I think a tournament is a great idea, but the summer is a better time for it, imo. Cut the regular season down to 60 games, cut a round out of the playoffs, and I'm sure teams would buy into a summer, single-elimination tournament in August-September. It'd probably be really, really popular. People love their single-elimination do or die playoff games. I'd never want the NBA to change their series format from the regular season, but a separate tournament would be awesome if they turned the regular season down a notch or two.

facts are facts though. bill simmons sure seams like a "nice fellow" with his ignorance when he constantly blasts people and tears them down to the, and ill admit, millions in his audience. im a nobody on realgm talking to you guys, on an internet message board (not tv, not article form).

He may be annoying on occasion and sometimes hes just as guilty of pandering to the typical douchey frat bro audiences with casual "were all guys here" misogyny as the rest of ESPN (seriously, how many degrading references to female archetypes needed to be pumped out by ESPN as a whole during the Lebron thing?)

BUT Grantland is moving sports journalism in the right direction, far away from the "KILLER TAKES FROM PUNDITS" BS that overflows on ESPN. Bill knows how fans think because hes a fan, and my mind is blown when people are upset at the fact that hes a Celtics homer.

Everything you write basically shows why you will never achieve what Simmons has achieved.

Simmons has gone a little downhill, but he and his site still have the best basketball writing on the internet.

look at his ignorance. on draft day his pathetic "dont help the heat" bull while 25-50 percent of people on THIS VERY BOARD were saying its likely that LeBron was going to leave MIA anyways. Making no assumptions on Napiers ability (I actually like his game) but if Charlotte didn't want him then they fleeced MIA because they **** them. They knew who MIA was going to take and realized they could basically get a free draft pick. Great move. Does Charlotte get any credit, do they get to hear a legit analysis on the pros and cons of the trade or the player they picked. No they get to watch the arrogant bum make stupid faces and whine about MIA. Dude, we get it, you like Boston, tell me another team with a good draft besides the Celtics (ohh yea, you don't know nothing about college ball). put your feelings to the side and DO YOUR JOB.

like I said, dudes betting records from the predictions he makes are pathetic across the board all sports and people treat him like some kind of guru. If you want a history lesson I admit the guy knows his stuff 100x more than me but thats not why people watch the draft or why they click on an article about current events in the nba or sports in general. I dont know about you guys I dont do it to make myself feel better that Bill Simmons likes the same shows I do either (and generally he doesn't, seems to watch alot of chick stuff).
