Randle / Smart

Post#1 » by Chris4Vikes » Wed Jul 16, 2014 5:55 pm

I am a Celtic fan and I come in peace. I am curious as to how Laker fans viewed the draft. What's done is done so it certainly does no harm in having an open and honest dialogue.....

When the Cs were on the clock at 6, I knew we were taking Smart or Randle (absent a trade). At the time, I was slightly favoring Randle, in part because we have Rondo and Smart is probably a PG. Now I am not so sure. I like them both a lot so I am torn, and Whoever the Cs chose I knew I would overthink it.

If Lakers had the 6th pick, would you have wanted Randle, Smart, or someone else? Thanks.

I'd still take Randle

A lot of people wanted Smart on the Lakers because they were uncertain about Nash.

My board was :

1. Andrew Wiggins
2. Joel Embiid
3. Jabari Parker
4. Dante Exum
5. Julius Randle

So definitely still Randle

I honestly think Smart would have been the better option for the Lakers in terms of just best player to pick. But considering the moves Lakers have made to acquire Lin and also lose a couple of key bigs, Randle is the better choice within this context we are in.

Rondo for Randle & Nash?

This offer presumes that I am Danny Ainge and I have come to the point that I have given up on Kevin Love.

problem with that is Rondo is a FA in 2015 and plus I like to see Randle grow as a player

Losing Gasol solidified taking Randle the better choice.

I am sure Rondo would sign LT with Lakers, since he knows it's a great organization, bright lights, and a nack for signing other stars. But I totally understand not wanting to trade Randle.

My concern for you guys is that you may be about to waste one of Kobe's final years.

Why trade anything of value for someone who can be got in free agency? The one thing our management hasn't compromised is cap space for the coming seasons and sooner or later we will get someone. Having a starting PF on a rookie contract is a great value in the long run.

PG & PF are the two deepest positions in the league right now and neither Randle or Smart were "can't miss" players in my opinion. Given the choice I'm glad we got Randle, he just seems like a high percentage scorer with a relentlessness in attacking the rim than settle for jumpers.

I never liked Smart (just his offensive game is atrocious with its only saving grace being his ability to draw fouls). Having said that this question is ironic considering the number of fans on this board that wanted Smart before the draft.

If Lakers were 6th ? Try as hard as possible to move up and get Dante Exum.

If cant do that, get Randle.

I wouldnt touch Smart, better to move down and get Payton. Triple double threat and not fat

I wanted Smart bad but I'm happy we went with a big.. Didn't expect all of our bigs except Hill to leave & thought we'd be able to land Melo. With the roster as it's constructed, Randle makes more sense.

I have watched a bunch of Summer League. While I realize Summer League is not a food future indicator, I did learn some things.

Smart players great except for the poor shooting, as advertised. But I am optimistic that it can improve. Form is decent, and he has plenty of arc, range, and decent touch. I know he'll work his tail off and if he can become a 35 percent 3 point shooter, he will be special. Great on D and a natural leader.

On Randle, it's hard to tell. He hasn't been playing leading into Summer League so his minutes have been low, and he's feeling his way. If he can show that he can shoot from mid range, he too will be special.

So in short, they both need to show improved shooting, but even if that doesn't improve a lot, they both will have good careers because of defense and rebounding.

From what I've seen Randle has a smooth jumper from mid-range. I've only seen a small sample size but I'm confident that he can shoot the mid-range and maybe even the 3 pointer if he practice that shot.

I wanted smart over randle at first. But after seeing the way randle moves like a prime Barkley...very glad we got randle. Big guys that move like randle is very rare. But smart to me could be a Westbrook type of player perhaps.

Return to Los Angeles Lakers
