^ Subsequent Draft is referring to the following years draft as outlined in the very first paragraph.

A Team that drafts a player shall, during the period from the date of such NBA
Draft (hereinafter, the “Initial Draft”) to the date of the next Draft (hereinafter, the “Subsequent
Draft”)

There was never two drafts. We don't need to sign Dinwiddie to a contract by two weeks before September 5th. He can only negotiate with us until the susequent draft, next June. If he is not signed by that time, he will re-enter the draft.

the player has not signed a Player Contract within the period between the Initial Draft and the Subsequent Draft, the Team that drafted the
player shall lose its exclusive right to negotiate with the player and the player will then be
eligible for selection in the Subsequent Draft.

If he is drafted in the subsequent draft, he will become a rookie free agent, again, two weeks before September 5th, if not offered a contract by the team who drafted him.

If a player is drafted by a Team in either an Initial or Subsequent Draft and that
Team does not make a Required Tender to such player, the player will become a Rookie Free
Agent on the July 16 following such Draft (for a First Round Pick) or on the September 6
following such Draft (for a Second Round Pick).

Those things are a PITA to read, but I interpreted it differently than I initially thought. It appears as though he at least needs to be tendered an offer in order for us to retain his rights. And if we tender him an offer, there's nothing stopping him from accepting it to start making money. That would automatically tie up his roster spot, which was the whole intention of not signing him in the first place.

I am much less inclined to take Liqourish's interpretation over Zach Lowe. Its common knowledge that you lose the rights to an unsigned draft pick unless he is playing overseas.

This was the single reason why Joe D drafted guys like Trent Plaisted and Deron Washington in 2008 and the reason why the draft and stash Euros idea has taken off.

I believe Liqourish and Lowe are both correct (they are essentially saying the same thing). I simply misinterpreted the FAQ the first time around, and made it sound like Liq suggested something that he perhaps did not. My apologies for the confusion.

Liqourish wrote:This is directly from the CBA. If I'm reading this correctly, only the Pistons have the right to negotiate with Dinwiddie. If they don't sign him to a "Required Tender or Player Contract", they lose their rights to him before the next draft. If he's not drafted in the next draft, then he becomes a rookie free agent. He really doesn't have much say. He either accepts what the Pistons offer or re-enters the draft next year.
