PART TWO
Thursday, June 4th, 2009 – Will he stay or will he go?

Canuck9 wrote:Would you guys want BC to deal the #9 pick on draft night if it meant improving this team next
year in an effort to try and convince CB4 to stay?

C_Money wrote:We havent drafted anybody since Bargnani. If anything we should get more picks to make up for the other 2-3 years.

Dr Positivity wrote:I very much doubt our #9 guy will be a star period. We should be happy with a 4th or 5th starter

For some fans, this was a doomsday scenario

lemondrop wrote:If Chris Bosh leaves with nothing coming back?

1. BC will be fired or leave on his own

2. A mass majority of Toronto fans will become disgusted with pro basketball players and turn on the Raptors after years of seeing pro players diss the fans, leave and whine. There is nothing Canadians hate more than 25 million dollar biotches, their patience is already wearing thin.

3. We will go into rebuild mode again and struggle for another five years or so

For others, it was a bold display of hubris

TiKusDom wrote:Yes if Bosh if offered the max the chances are 100 : 1 that he is past here after 2010. No free agent has ever walked away from a max bird rights contract.

The rest were just sad

C_Money wrote:Hopefully 10 years from now we have #4 hanging up in the rafters. That would make us look like a legit franchise.

While the debate raged on in Raptorland, a report made by the Miami Herald came and went.

• Although the Heat covets potential 2010 free agent Chris Bosh, one NBA person said Toronto general manager Bryan Colangelo recently told him the current plan is to try to surround Bosh with better players instead of trading him. That plan will change this summer only if Bosh expresses serious doubts about re-signing. A friend of Dwyane Wade said Wade would love to play with Bosh in Miami.

Friday, June 5th, 2009 – Jordan Hill, BPA

68% of posters voted in favour of drafting Jordan Hill, the consensus best player available. From this day forward, we will come to know this event as Jordan Hill, BPA Day.

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 – Point-Center

Salted Meat wrote:With Bosh commanding so much space in the mid/low post, and our desperate need for a player who can create their own shot, is it possible to run our half-court offense through Bargnani? …have him, say, take control of the ball around the arc… and then run plays based on the matchup equation: Bargs vs. Big = iso; Bargs vs. Small = post-up…

Bargnani has the passing ability in both the post and driving situations to take advantage of switches, and can find Bosh down low… he’s the only true “match-up nightmare” that we currently have… wouldn’t it make sense to exploit that as much as possible? This way, Bosh could play off-ball, and essentially be a secondary scoring option, despite him commanding more attention than Bargnani.

We could then fill out our roster with a glass-cleaning big that can guard the 3, and a defensive stopper at the off-guard who can drain an open three-pointer.

If we can re-sign Marion and Pops, bring over Delfino, and use the MLE on a defensive-minded shooting guard, does that give us enough surrounding the Bosh/Bargnani combo to make this strategy effective? What else would we need (if anything)?

I’m (clearly) intrigued by the possibility of using Bargs as a point-center… but does Bargnani even have what it takes to shoulder the load as a no.1 option? Would Bosh be fine with possibly fewer touches and a more aggressive defensive role? Can this work?

Evidently, we needed this draft to happen sooner rather than later

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 – Chad Ford Locks It In

Analysis: The Raptors have some needs on the wing since Anthony Parker and Shawn Marion are hitting free agency. On talent alone, DeRozan is one of the most gifted players in the draft. His strong play at the end of the season combined with a confident performance at the combine could push him higher.
But if he's here, sources say the Raptors won't pass. If DeRozan is gone, they'll decide between Duke's Gerald Henderson, Earl Clark and Holiday, with Holiday in the lead.

NBADraft.net didn’t think the feeling was mutual

Toronto has Derozan coming in for a workout on Tuesday. Apparently he is attending the workout but not thrilled with the idea of playing across the border. The Raptors may be forced to look for someone who is, and Henderson might be the guy for them.

2009 NBA Draft Week

→Boston could be trying to trade up to No. 2 (Grizzlies), No. 3 (Thunder), No. 4 (Kings), No. 5 (Wizards), No. 9 (Raptors) or No. 11 (Nets). Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen are players they might be willing to trade. The Celtics don’t have a first-round pick.

Troubadour wrote:If that's an actual offer, we take it and run. Rondo is better than anyone we could take at 9.

I know we all have an infatuation for DeRozan, but Rondo is proven.

With that said, this will never happen, so I'm printing a DeRozan jersey as we speak :D

16 year old Troubadour was pretty confident we’d get DeRozan, so confident that he reportedly played a game of the Sims 3 and named his Sim “DeMar DeRozan.” That did not stop the rumours

Chad Ford:
If DeRozan is gone, they'll decide between Duke's Henderson and Holiday, with Holiday in the lead. In fact, one source close to the Raptors insisted Sunday that it was Holiday, not DeRozan, whom the Raptors would select in this scenario. We'll be watching that one closely.

Alfred wrote: Source: Raptors are considering James Johnson with #9
This comes from someone within the Raptors organization that I have recently spoken with. They said that they are seriously considering taking James Johnson with the ninth overall pick, and that he is a very impressive player.

ryan (ns)
Chad, what does Bryan Colangelo have up his sleeve? Any chance he tries to move up for Evans?

Chad Ford
He might ... he could use Jose Calderon as a chip. Sounds like they're starting to cool toward DeRozan ... at least that's the buzz today. Seems like Holiday or James Johnson now.
[/quote]

Dr Positivity wrote:I like how before today there was approximately 3000 posts of discussion and arguing about T Will, a guy we were never even considering, and about 125 on James Johnson, who may be the frontrunner.

Thursday, June 25th, 2009 - *Drake Voice* Draft Day

DX: What are you hearing from Toronto in terms of what they might be doing?

DD: I haven’t really discussed it specifically with them. I know Toronto really likes me and I really like Toronto, so like I said, when draft night comes I’m going to really pay attention to what happens.

DX: If you get past Toronto, what do you think you’re next stopgap is?

DD: I really don’t know, there’s no telling where it could be. Every time David Stern walks up there you never know who he is going to call, so we’re just going to have to wait and see.

Chi Dynasty12 wrote:Looks like it's coming down to DD vs. JJ, who do you guys think it is?

Michael Grange: Raptors have their man?

Wow. A guy covers a little horse-racing, a little baseball, a little hockey, and next thing you know all hell breaks loose.

More on this later further down, but Raptor fans should start Googling James Johnson. Right now he’s looking like their most likely candidate at No. 9 tonight, with Jrue Holiday the next best bet. DeMar DeRozan, the feeling is, won’t last that far down.

This turn of events caused posters to predict he had received a promise from a team. Was it the Minnesota Timberwolves or was it our Toronto Raptors? Find out in Part II of my RealGM History: DeMar DeRozan

And to heighten the drama, remember this kids. Minnesota had two consecutive picks, and their SGs around that time were Corey Brewer, Rodney Carney, Wayne Ellington and Rashad McCants. How could DeMar possibly slip by the T-Wolves?

the thing I remember most with DD is most everyone thought he was one of highest potential guys, but very very raw.. those are the guys you want as you start moving away the top 5- most people were pretty satisfied with the decision to draft DeRozan too

BC had his flaws but he was awesome at the draft.. one of the best in recent memory

good thread tho- someone should to one for Ross/Val and even Lowry trade

I forgot how James Johnson was a real possibility. Imagine telling posters back then that we'd get DeRozan and James Johnson...haha.

I went back to look at my posts when we drafted Demar Derozan at the time and found this:
I'd be happy if he turns out as good as Ronnie Brewer at least. I don't think he'll ever be an all-star.

At the top, click my posts. then go back to the last page. Its tough to find exact posts though (because obviously it goes by date), and sometimes it gives you an error msg.

Like heres a thread by the OP about a master list of coaches from 08. One of my first few posts on this board, I was still a jerk then too, hah sorry Troubadour.

Everytime I go to "my posts" I get the 1st page of most recent posts, but when I click the second page, or any page for that matter, i get:

Information: Sorry but you cannot use search at this time. Please try again in a few minutes.

Great Thread, keep it coming. I was on the TWill/Earl Clark wagon myself with Derozan and Holiday behind them.

Great thread, but a missing element is that there was a purported Raptor "insider" on the boards constantly telling us that BC was waging a massive disinformation campaign to make it look like we weren't picking DeMar, when in fact he was the target all along.

I bought into the DeMar hype. I liked his name. And boy was I sweating Minny's second pick.

There was nothing to suggest DD would become what he is now back then. And nobody could predict some of the other guys projected in his area would end up out of the league and/or scrubs.

I don't remember what I thought of him. I guess I didn't have a strong reaction to him either way, like with most picks.
