Will be interesting to see. I think his logic was that if you focus on O boards you're going to give up transition baskets, so it's better to completely shut down transition points than to occasionally grab an O board. If we can limit transition opportunities because of improved individual defense, maybe he'll allow more offensive rebounding.

Just looking at NBA team rebounding statistics and it looks like Clifford has a good point. Of the top 10 offensive rebounding teams, only 2 made the playoffs - Memphis and Portland. Of the bottom 10 offensive rebounding teams, only 2 missed the playoffs.

It's an old SVG philosophy.

These are my new favorite shot charts. Here is Marvin's: http://cdn.hardwoodparoxysm.com/shotchart/pshot.html?width=800&player=Marvin%20Williams&year=2013

The left elbow 3 is definitely his hotspot.

I hope this thread get locked. At 7M a year he's gonna be almost as bad as Tyrus. Lol.

I provided what I think is pretty convincing evidence that he's a better stretch four than McBob to pair with Al, at least with regard to shooting. Care to provide a counter argument?

7M might be a little too much, but its only for two years. I can deal with that.

It's not that convincing to me. I guess we'll have wait and see how messy Messy Marv can be assuming he can even stay healthy.

Marvin and McBob's career numbers are closer than I thought. McBob doesn't even have a Huge edge in assists like I thought he would. Stephenson definitely helps offset what we did lose in McRobers passing wise. It's all a matter of fit and hopefully Marvin is hot more than not with those 3's but playing with Al he should have plenty of open looks.

That's my current opinion and I'm sticking to it. We'll find out as the season goes along in a few months from now, so let's be patient

Where would you put Than Young in that group?

Thaddeus Young > Cody Zeller > Marvin Williams

Did you see my trade in the trade thread. I we could move to get Thad Young would you do it for this team. You have watched more of the Sixers than me so I am just not sure. If we are making a push at conference finals this year could he help us get there over what we have now?

I would certainly encourage & recommend Cho to follow through on your trade proposal if Hinkie is willing to oblige, even with the 1st rounder included. It would almost guarantee the Hornets to be a top-3 seed in the Eastern Conference with that type of complimentary depth

not sure if this was reported elsewhere today, but i heard cho on the radio tonight. most of the interview was about lance, but cho did say something of note. he said "we brought marvin in to be our starting power forward". he said it in passing and then moved on and the hosts never asked a follow-up. but based on that comment, it seems
1) he views marvin as a power forward
2) he was brought in to start, not back up MKG at small forward, not back up zeller or vonleh
3) zeller is not viewed as the starter

I agree with him starting. I think next year we should look for someone else unless we have a great season and he stays healthy. We are going to really miss McRoberts tho. I was a HUGE fan of his.

as much as we are paying him, he should start, but I hope if Zeller or Vonleh outplays him we don't keep starting him out of a sense of obligation.

I came here to post than Wesley Johnson just got signed for 1 million

Wesley
9/4/1.6 42/37 averages last year

Thanks for the share.

Neither of the young pups are ready to start (not that they never will be) but we are in win now mode. Marvin's rebounding numbers seem low for a PF maybe playing alongside Big Al he will get some more opportunities.

Looks like Marvin got the Lance treatment today: officially signed, press conference, and took over the twitter account for a bit.

Here's the 22 minute press conference (the first 14:30 are just the open mics and water bottles): http://www.nba.com/hornets/hornets-sign-marvin-williams

Quick notes:

Only two cell phones at the table, Lance had a few more and some recorders as well.

First thing Cho mentions is his 3-point shooting, cites his improvement from a 1-10 season early in career. Also a great locker room presence and "great pro."

Marvin: Excited to be back in NC, excited, about rebrand, excited about reuniting with old teammates (mentions Al and Pargo).

Hasn't spoken in detail with Clifford, though Clifford likes how he fits into the system and how he fits with Al.

Sorenson asks about UNC teammates: "I actually live with Sean in the summertime, we meet up with and train with Felton every day."

Is meeting up at Krispy Kreme considered "training" now? Sorry, inner-monologue there.

Rick asks the best way to help Al, based on playing together in Utah: "I offer perimeter shooting. Stretch the floor to give Al space and he'll do the rest."

Matt Rochinski (Hornets.com) notes the signings of Marvin, Al, and DESHAWN [sic] Stephenson and asks what attracted him to us: "The players, re-uniting with Al, Pargo, and Mark Price, coming back to NC, Michael Jordan, and how the fans really got behind the team during playoff run."

Has met Jordan before, but didn't speak with him prior to signing. Has spoken since.

Cho: "We're almost done (in FA), but we're always looking to improve the team too."

Cho on plans for Marvin: "Ultimately up to Coach, but he offers versatility on both ends of court, and at 3 and 4." Again emphasizes stretching the floor.

Was bringing in 3-point-shooting from the floor a priority?

Cho: "Yes. As Marvin mentioned, his skill set works well with Al, from stretching the floor to his presence in the low-post."

Nice write up BOB.

This jumped out at me when I watched. I'm curious if Clifford himself knows what he's going to do with Marvin yet.

Makes sense. He fits better with our starting lineup and will create more spacing than someone like Zeller or Vonleh.

Should have just kept McRoberts. Don't be surprised if Zeller gives Williams a run for his money for the starting spot.

Marvin will be the starter opening night, though.
