What almost occurred between Celts and Kings on draft night?

Post#1 » by Chris4Vikes » Sat Jul 19, 2014 10:19 pm

Woj from Yahoo Sports tweeted vaguely right before the Celtics picked Marcus Smart that Celtics and Kings were discussing the 6th pick and Ben McLemore. It was a single tweet that was never referenced again. Woj does not tweet these things without cause. He's the best in the business. This makes me think that the Cs and Kings may have business yet to do. Where there is smoke there is fire.

So what almost happened exactly? Does anyone know? Does anyone care to speculate intelligently?

The Kings have had smoke with a ton of teams. Truth was the Kings were trying to move up to 6 to draft Stauskas. For some reason they thought he'd be off the board by 8. I have no idea why but they did. I think somebody was just taking the piss out of the Kings front office.

No offense as a Celtics fan, but the Kings front office is a joke. Stauskus is a nice player, but a major reach even at 8. They should have taken Vonleh or McBuckets. They will be regret the pick, even though Stauskus will be a decent pro.

Major reach? What qualifies as a major reach? Truth is, Stauskas would have been taken by the Hornets at 9 or Nuggets at 11.

Unfortunately for you I believe that you are going to discover the definition of "major reach" with Marcus Smart at six.

THAT was a reach.

You state "no offense" and follow it up with an ignorant statement. That's when fans will start to take offense. The front office, just over a year of experience, are being labeled as a joke? And your only evidence to support that stupid statement is their draft selection of Stauskas? I mean, you come off as an uneducated, ignorant person with a statement like that. You base this solely off of their Summer League stats, or your deep and thorough pre-draft analysis of each individual player? Lets not kid ourselves about McBuckets, he may turn into an all-star (no one has any idea), but Summer League stars include several draft bust in past history.

Here's a Summer League stat line from 2010: 21 Points (7-8 FG), 14 Rebounds, two Assists, six Blocks

....Hasheem Thabeet....

The list goes on.

And where would McBuckets play exactly? At least with Stauskas he doesn't play at a position where this team has intentions of a singular individual manning that position for the next 5 years.

The only player I'm worried about is Vonleh. He was the right kind of player they wanted next to Cousins, but I'm not solid on him being a star. Of course if he develops into a 10 and 10 player who can block a few shots and spread the floor then it's probably a whoops on this FO unless they can land someone like Smith to fill the void.

C's fan here, we also heard we might be getting 8 from you without giving up 6 or Rondo.. Maybe for 17/Bass, 17/future 1st, or for Jared Sullinger..

I'm sure our FO likes Mclemore's potential but any deal would have to be based on your impatience and/or salary concerns.. Like Bass/Thornton for Terry/JT/Mclemore...

That's not an insult by the way- just that I have trouble seeing a trade that works based on player value alone...

Those are terrible for the kings. I guarantee you we were not trading the 8th pick for bass or sully and 17. Neither of those players are worth dropping down that far especially when we already have too many mediocre power forwards. And really bass/Thornton for terry/JT/mcmlemore??? Your kidding right? You do realize kings traded Thornton away for basically nothing just to get the guy the hell out of here. Now we are bringing Thornton back by trading Ben? Makes no sense to give up Ben just to shave one year of thompsons contract (last year is only 2 mil guaranteed).

If there's anyone on Boston's roster I'm interested in, aside from Rondo, it would be Olynyk. Beyond that nothing intrigues me on that roster.

This is an absolute joke, Kings offering Ben, JASON TERRY and a 1st for Rondo????? Don't even try that ACL excuse, Kings need to throw in Stauskas, add ANOTHER first and take on Gerald Wallace at LEAST.

Can't see the Kings giving up an asset like Ray in a trade for Smith

So your saying mcmlemore, expirings, AND stauskas AND 2 first round picks for a guy coming off an injury and most importantly could very well bolt after one year?? You crazy!! Lol

Even a highly ranked prospect and a 1st round pick for a one year rental is asking a lot. If rondo was locked up for a few years it would be completely different. How long have the celts been shopping rondo? Seems like a couple years. If celts don't do something the this years trade deadline they might not get anything for him.

How would you all feel about something like Rondo, Gerald Wallace for Terry, Mclemore, Williams, Landry and a 1st?

I'd be all for it, except for the fact that the Kings would rival the Nets in highest payroll in the league with Cousins, Gay, Smith, Rondo and Wallace all on the same team

I'd be very happy if we could pull those trades off.

Rondo/Collison
Stauskas/trash
Gay/Outlaw
Smith/Landry/beard brothers
Cuz/Evans

I'd look to move Acy for Jeff Withey or something similar.

Our bench even looks decent if Landry recovers.

Shop Williams around for a SG.

Those trades would be nice, but Kings cannot trade a first for another three years. Doubt there is any truth to them

Are you guys expecting to resign Gay starting from his current salary? Or will he take a paycut? I can't imagine any other team in the league giving him 19 million..
