Like I have said many times, including in this thread, we as fans have only a limited ability to make informed choices about prospects, no matter how much youtube we watch, because teams invest millions in scouting and manhours on these guys. I didn't like the Spurs pick of Kyle Anderson either, but like I said "I am going to give the Spurs the benefit of the doubt as always, and hope he proves me wrong... like they always used to when I doubted them". Henny obviously thinks Gordon is awesome, so I'll cleave to his excellent judgement thus far.

I think what sold Henny on Gordon and Payton was their character and personalities, combined with their basketball skills. You can look at clips and say Vonleh or Smart are better but how would their personalities mesh with our team? I think Smart is the best NBA ready prospect but I'm not sure how well he will be able to handle success. I think he went back to school partly because of fear. Watching him in the press conference after the draft and seeing the sweat pour from his head, I feel for him. I really think he needs a Robin Williams from Good Will Hunting.

I always liked Payton. But I've gone back and looked closer at Gordon, and while he's not a 3, I think maybe Rodman/Kemp isn't unrealistic if things pan out. Henny thinks they will, so I guess I need to put some trust in him, given he keeps hitting home runs. If it doesn't work out, obviously he'll take the heat for it. They both gave great press conferences certainly.

Two parts to this, I wish I could give 2 And-1s

1) The press now states that Orlando interviewed the whole of the Payton universe. It included interviewing his academic adviser! There is a whole world of scouting that led to this kid being tabbed, and I as a huge Magic fan trust GM Hennigan's home-work on this future starting PG for Orlando.

2) San Antonio drafting Kyle Anderson: how is it possible that an NBA champion potentially drafts the best player of the year. Seriously, the Spurs might have gotten the next Magic Johnson. At pick #30!

Just think if Otis didn't flush our second round pick we could've got Jarnell Stokes or Jeremi Grant. It'll be an interesting year with all these rookies. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few stars that were drafted after the 20 pick.

The Spurs front office guys, and there are a few of them now, do ridiculous amounts of background work. I remember Presti had guys interviewing people on campus about Beal on the down low and such, when they were trying to move Harden for him.

Before the draft, I was hoping the Magic will take Exum at 4 then Anderson for the 12th. Anderson's game is similar to Pierce & Hedo. Maybe Spurs saw that too.

I finally have some insider info! lol, not sure if this has been posted anywhere, but I heard from someone who has a source, yeah I know, lame.

Anyways, the source inside the Magic said Oladipo and Exum played one on one, and Exum looked completely over matched. I don't know if Oladipo played Payton, but that would be interesting to find out if he did and if he did well is that why we drafted him instead of Exum.

Gotta say, Exum didn't exactly blow me away during the summer league, he came off looking like just as much a project as Gordon

that's still not really a good reason not to draft a guy though. Oladipo is four year older than exum, he should dominate him.

Man strength certainly plays a factor in 1-on-1. If it actually happened, it would have been impossible for Exum to stop Dipo from getting to the rim.

No offense to the poster who claims to have a source, but I doubt there was a 1v1 workout between exum/dipo. Exum's agent, who has been holding his hand as if he was a baby throughout the whole draft/summer league process, probably wouldn't have allowed that...
