I love Lavine's potential, but the one reason why I would pick Exum above him is between the ears. Exum strikes me as a young kid who just gets it. Hopefully I'm wrong but for some reason Lavine reminds of JR Smith type personality.miltk wrote:hyper316 wrote:Exum is an intriguing prospect, I can see him like a Anthony Parker type that can handle the ball and guard opposing wings with his size.
Payton could be the next Rondo, has excellent defense and court vision. His shot can be developed, good thing at this point is he is not trigger happy like Brandon Jennings.
I'd say Payton would have a bigger impact in rookie year being in the East, whereas Exum will likely surpass Payton in year 2-3 being able to do more than just a PG.
what is intriguing about exum that is not intriguing about lavine?
Every year there's a PG whose the next best thing, so....

His shot selection early on in his freshman season at UCLA reminded me of JR Smith.

Anyone else pronounce Exum as "Ex-Oom" instead of "Ex-Umm"?
#Raptors are 7-1. In 6 of the past 10 seasons, a team that has started a season 7-1 has gone on to win an NBA championship.

Re: Every year there's a PG whose the next best thing, so...
I was on the Exum bandwagon before SL even after my team didn't draft him but seeing him play in SL made me happy that I'm not a GM and we went with Payton.
I do not think Exum will reach his ceiling playing with Utah and playing out of position. He is not a great shooter and is a score first PG like Burke and ultimately do not think it's going to work there, not saying he won't have a bright future but do not think he "could be the next big thing" in the situation he is currently in.
Same kinda goes with Smart being behind Rondo, very good mentor and could learn a lot but immediate impact I do not see it with Rondo still on the team.
I think there is a lot of undervaluing here when it comes to Lavine but for subject sake he is not starting over Rubio so I guess he will play more SG than PG disqualifying him.
Napier LOL! Nah I'm joking I like the kid, has a lot of heart but need's a lot of grooming.
So with all that said and how teams are currently constructed I think it's Payton to lose and I'm genuinely not saying that because I am a Magic fan lol.

I've seen Lavine play. Nothing was wrong with my original post.
He has good handles but his vision is limited, his passes are off the mark and he cant anticipate many plays in advance.
He is NOT a PG. Anybody calling him a Westbrook type should just remove themselves from this board.
You're the one who looks ignorant.
Maybe at UCLA but you obviously haven't seen him in SL. He basically did everything that you said he couldn't.
No, he didn't. He played well in the Summer League, he just didnt show enough that he has what it takes to run a offense.
He seems mechanical with all his passes. His instincts are not very well from the spot.
He displayed his athleticism, his ability to shoot off the dribble and fluidity he moves in the Summer league, but not any PG skills that indicates he's someone you can handle over the keys to run a offense full time.
He's a two guard who has potential to play PG in spurts of a game.
Hilarious, falsely accuse of me of being ignorant when thats how YOU'RE coming off right now.
Did I ever say he'd be a PG? He showed that he's capable of playing the 1 in the NBA but not full time during SL. He's a 2 that can be a combo guard but for you to say that he has no PG skills/instincts was ignorant. They were on full display during SL. I watched all his games and he showed a great ability to drive and kick, he had some lazy passes but for the most part did a great job of not turning the ball over. Zach also did a great job of feeding the ball down low to our bigs Fesenko+Dieng. Whether playing the 1 or 2 Zach will be good as a ball handler in the NBA.

Re: Every year there's a PG whose the next best thing, so...
Exum has still the most long term Potential
when will people finally learn that SL is not a valid metric to evaluate a player??
i remember players like Anthony "Magic" Randolph tearing up the SL while doing nothing after that in the actual season
i remember Lebron James beeing pretty mediocre doing 15/7/4 on 40fg% before his rookie year
Chris Paul doing 11/5/5 in SL
its not a very reliable method of predict a players level of sucsess
Payton is a nice pick.. and Marcus Smart has the will to be the best.. but idk if he can ever reach that
so this years draft Exum is the best bet.. but only if Utah sorts out their backcourt logjam
Burke would need to go.. Exum is a PG... let him flourish.. Trey is not THAT great
and in the future...
Emanuel Mudiay and Tyrus Jones look very promising along with Malik Newman

Like i already stated, he did not show any PG skills/instincts during the Summer League. Nothing was ignorant with what i said, its the truth. People want him to be a PG so bad that any glimpse of hope he shows, they jump off the roof with excitement.
He did other things well, just not PG related things. Theres more to being a PG than good handles.

Newman doesn't look to want to develop into a PG. I think he'll be an undersized 2guard in the Monta Ellis mold.
Dennis Smith Jr. and Derryck Thornton look promising though.

I wanted Wolves to draft Lavine months ago and he was drafted to be a 2 since we already have Rubio. The only backtracking that's going on is the one you have made up in your own mind. You can keep telling yourself that Lavine has no PG skills, i'm done talking about it since your outlook on the topic is so limited. Have a good day.

Exum's not a shoot first PG so whoever said that was wrong. But I like Payton as the best two way PG in this draft. Just seems to be in the best position right now. Exum needs to work on his off hand.

Jazz fan here. People will be calling Exum a bust after this season. He is extremely raw and needs a lot of minutes at this level to get comfortable. Going to make a ton of mistakes this year and his shot needs much improvement.
In 3 or 4 years though...Exum has the skills and athleticism to be a better play-making version of Westbrook. Scary thought right there.....

Why is it so inconceivable? If he trains and adds muscle while honing his skills and understanding of the game....I could totally see that being a great comparison. He can score the ball, and has the ability to involve his teammates.

Dante's first step is about as far as he goes to match Russ in movement. Not as explosive at the rim, can't switch gears the same way, doesn't have Russ' change of direction, and Dante is more pass-first than Russ is. Jumper release is a lot slower with less elevation as well.
I think even 3-4 years from now Dante won't be the same type of player Russ is. Two different mentalities, two different players. I can see the Parker comp before the WestBreezy comp.
