Van Gundy Tells Josh Smith He's Unlikely To Be Traded
Stan Van Gundy has reached out to Josh Smith to inform him that reports of trade talks involving the Detroit Pistons and Sacramento Kings have been inaccurate. Van Gundy told Smith he expects him to be in training camp with the Pistons this fall.
The Kings made calls about Smith back in June, but there was never an offer that created serious discussions.

Detroit Pistons president and coach Stan Van Gundy reached out to forward Josh Smith to tell him that reports of the franchise engaging in substantive trade talks with Sacramento centered on Smith have been inaccurate and – barring an unexpected turn of events – Smith will be in training camp with the Pistons this fall, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
Sacramento had made calls about Smith in June, but Detroit never heard an offer that remotely interested them and never seriously engaged in discussions, sources told Yahoo Sports.
Since his hiring in the spring, Van Gundy has had productive discussions with Smith and sources say that Smith has been enthusiastic about moving forward with Van Gundy as coach.
Smith could return to a frontcourt that includes forward Greg Monroe, who is a restricted free agent this summer. The Pistons have been willing to engage teams in sign-and-trade scenarios for Monroe, but those talks have gained little traction, sources said - Woj

1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years

yea we prolly couldnt get any value for smith unless taking back trash so we might as well keep him till the last year of his contract.

At least Smith's value can only go up, right?
Good move saying this though.

SVG attempting to drive up the price of Smith.
Nice. Everyone knows he's not a long term fit at all or even short term, so if he can drive up value, we'll be able to trade him for nice pieces later on.

If the only offers were from the Kings, good move SVG.

Re: Van Gundy Tells Josh Smith He's Unlikely To Be Traded
Not that I have any idea what the real truth is, but if SVG and Smith are being honest, then I'm fine with this. Let's get Monroe signed and start training camp under SVG. This is going to be a much better team. I think there is a good chance that Jennings and Smith can both be the players we HOPED they would be for us. I also think there is a good chance that our team D will be much better. I may change my mind during the season, but I'd like to see what we have.
Oh, and wouldn't mind us getting a better starting SF before the season starts

Re: Van Gundy Tells Josh Smith He's Unlikely To Be Traded
We could do a three team trade
Pistons get Zeller + Wright
Dallas get Neal + Henderson
Hornets get Mekel + Crowder + Smith + Mitchell
Pistons get money back this season to put to Greg Monroe
Hornets get a upgrade at PF and SF plus they get a third option at PG
Mavs get a SG that can start, so we can slide Monta to PG.
This would allow you to cut 5 m this season to put to Greg Monroe and you get a expiring contact and you get a young piece with Zeller.

I suspect this is also to pressure Monroe into taking less than the max. If Smith was assuredly out the door, we lose all leverage.

I think you missed the point of this thread - Smith is "unlikely" to be traded.

Yeah your right but I am assuming that is based on you guys not having a option to move him. I think this move good for Detroit. Wright > Mitchell and Zeller is a back up you for the future. You get to cut 5m this season plus 5m next season. I think its a huge win for Detroit.

there was no point of trading him when his value was low as ever.

Josh Smith or not I'm excited to see what SVG brings to this team. I can't wait til the season finally starts. Offseason blows.

Re: Van Gundy Tells Josh Smith He's Unlikely To Be Traded
It's actually pretty good having SVG s Coach and GM. If the "GM" wants to improve Smith's trade value, it doesn't take much to convince the "coach" to create playing time and an offense to highlight Smith

The writing has been on the wall for this for sometime.
I thought I'd be more upset by this, but I'd already been settling into this mindset for some time. He's just not an easy guy to move.

All indications suggest that WE were the ones who turned down the Kings offer. SVG can move him for a straight salary dump I'm sure but he is just trying to get value back in return.

exactly this. I was pissed at Joe D for wanting value for Smith, I feel similarly about SVG but am willing to atleast give him an opportunity to coach Smith before going for my pitchfork.

Re: Van Gundy Tells Josh Smith He's Unlikely To Be Traded
I don't think his trade value is that low. He is a great defender with lower offense abilities. I just figured that trade was better than Kings trade. Williams + Thompson + Ray for Smith. With this I thought sending less money back by 5m with one legit PF/C combo that expires and a piece you can start building around with Zeller. What if Hornets add a 1st? I just don't want to see Monroe leave and you keep Smith. Monroe has more value then Smith because his age and his good offense ability.

As I said, he's hard to move. The only offer we got involved us taking back at least one other bad contract and really otherwise getting nothing of substance in return.
And the Kings offered this with the full knowledge that we didn't have any other takers. Its unfortunate, but it is what it is. Nothing to do now but hope SVG can get him playing a little better so someone might be willing to take him. If not, at a shorter contract he could be easier to move next year.

Re: Van Gundy Tells Josh Smith He's Unlikely To Be Traded
Good. We're not going to take a straight salary dump. Why? Because if you do, you're actually lowering your chances to go to the Playoffs. And since Smith's value can ONLY go up, then we can get a lot more value by mid season or the next offseason. I think we can get not only a salary dump by midseason but actually a productive player as Smith's value will be much higher by then.
