Does this make him a RFA after the three years or a UFA but we'd have his full bird rights? At least it shows they value him more than a standard second rounder, and also the investment of the three years is beneficial to both the team and player if the plan is to essentially red shirt him for the season.

That's weird though given our comittments to Jennings and Augustin, which go on for 3 and 2 years, respectively.

He'll have 2 pg ahead of him on the depth charts for most of the life of that contract. Seems strange to give a 3 year deal to a third stringer.

One or two of the years could also be guaranteed. Interesting to see if that means some major moves are on the horizon or if Mitchell will get cut.

^I think it makes sense in that if he was given a two year standard second rounder deal he'd be locked behind Jennings and Augustin for the length of his rookie deal, but the third year will see Jennings expired and thus he'd be here with Augustin only and should have more playing time available.

Seems as though we're expecting "6th man to starter" quality out of him. A three year deal gives us bird rights and keeps him an RFA.

If Dinwiddie is going to be out for a long time this season they probably wanted more than one season of him fully healthy (hopefully) and under contract.

yeah that's what I was thinking. Also, the cost per year of a 2nd rd pick is so cheap, the more years the better anyways.

I wonder who's getting dumped though because now we have 15 players under contract with Monroe yet to be signed.

Also if we trade Monroe for multiple players we'll be over the limit even more.

On the flip, if they are serious in their intent to red shirt him, Dinwiddie probably wanted that third year of guaranteed money as well to go along with their play-it-safe strategy/schedule with him rather than trying to force things on his knee to get back and on the court ASAP.

Tony Mitchell is likely the 16th man right now, on the outside looking in. Will probably have to battle Datome in camp for the last roster spot, and Datome as the reputation of the three point assassin type that Stan has actively loaded the roster up with so seems like a more natural fit to what Stan is looking for.

I believe it will be the same situation the Rockets had with Parsons this year. Give him the QO and he is UFA after his fourth year. Deny him the QO like Houston did and he is a RFA after 3 years.

We will get a close up view of this in action next summer with Singler, since he will basically be going through the same thing.

Also, this doesn't mean his 3rd year is guaranteed. Mitchel has the same type contract and his 3rd year is not guaranteed.

Nice "Low risk, high reward" move for both parties. For us, min contracts are essentially nothing and we'll have him locked up if he regains his form. For him, he gets guaranteed money coming off a serious injury. If he pans out, he'll still have plenty of time for bigger paychecks. Most importantly, it takes any pressure off for him rushing rehab. He's gonna get paid and get a nice long look to prove himself.

Yep. Mitchell too. This might be becoming the thing to do for high picks in the second round.
