There have been plenty of players who have made the USA team who weren't exactly deserving. Kidd and Billups had no right being on the respective teams, they were just put on there to essentially provide leadership to a somewhat young team.

Now, Derrick isn't that they of veteran in the same light as Kidd or Billups, but it wouldn't shock me if they selected him in favor of perhaps some player who is slightly more deserving more as an investment for now and the future to provide a leadership role. Just a guess though.
Why so serious?

His ass shouldn't even be at the damn practice. Wall forever getting snubbed by him. He doesn't make his team better, and barely a point guard.

disagree. his combination of shooting and handling will play well in int'l play, better than derrick's game imo.

No one seems to be worried about Kyrie? I'd probably be more worried about him than Lillard making it over Rose...unless I missed that he's out or something.

Hope he gets to handle Kyrie in the scrimmage. Before injury, Kyrie could do jack squat against DRoses athleticism.

I think coach K wants to be a little different so we'll see 4 bigs make the team and then a decent split among the 1-3

Bradley Beal, DeMarcus Cousins, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Kenneth Faried, Paul George, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Korver, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Chandler Parsons, Derrick Rose and Klay Thompson.

PG
Curry, Iriving, Lillard, Rose

SG/SF with range
Beal, Harden, Korver, Thompson

F with dribble ability
George, Durant, DeRozan, Parsons, Hayward

Bigs
Davis, Drummond, Faried, Griffin, Love, Cousins

I assume this is how the camp goes

Locks
Curry, Harden, Durant, George, Davis, Griffin, Love

Battles
Two of Lillard, Rose, and Irving
Two of Beal, Thompson, Korver, Parsons, Hayward, Derozan
One of Drummond, Faried, Cousins

Your Team USA rotation

Curry/PG/PG
Harden/SG
George/SF
Durant/Love
Davis/Griffin/Big

Who will get selected and who deserves to be selected?

if you have watched team usa in recent yrs, then you can expect a front court to look very different from what you have listed.
team usa only plays 1 "big" at a time for the most part. KD plays the int'l 4, which is more of a 3 in the nba.

love, griffin and AD should suffice as the "big" in the lineup.

Six of the 19 invitees are bigs in the NBA, I don't think that three of them are getting cut. You have to remember that in 2012 there wasn't really any bigs to really have on the team. I mean the 2010 team took Tyson Chandler, a very young Kevin Love, and Lamar Odom because of the lack of bigs.

coach k likes to press and trap to disrupt and force tempo . i can't imagine them effectively trapping with curry/harden.

i think the lineup structure will remain the same. 2 guards, 2 wings, 1 big playing 4 out 1 in to maximize spacing, driving lanes, open court play and defensive disruption. 4 bigs is overkill and a wasted roster spot imo.

He ran traps when he had much better defenders and much better athletes on the wing. In fact, the two ideas (more bigs, less trapping) would be related. The current roster of players does not lead to a lot of trapping (really only Derrick has any history of being an average defender at the PG spot and he's raw) unless he really surprises and takes Thompson and Beal over Harden.

I think that the final roster is likely

Curry/ TWO of Rose/Irving/Lillard
Harden/Thompson
Durant/George
Love/Griffin
Davis/Drummond
One Wild Card (Battle of the losing PG v Beal most likely)

I think if it was the full Olympic team, they'd go three bigs (Griffin, Davis, and Love) and then athletes on the wing (Westbrook, Paul, Curry, James, Anthony, Durant, Harden, George)

I will certainly be nervous on this day. Hopefully he makes the team, but more so, I just want him to be unscathed whilst looking good there, final roster or not.

Too much overkill IMO if they only take three bigs, either they're taking 3 straight SG, 4 PG, or a wing player who has no business on the team (Parsons, Hayward, or DeRozan).

Also, I can see team USA wanting to be flexible.

not all the perimeter players have to trap, but they do need 2 of them that can. they could improve their ability to trap by simply taking harden out and starting thompson or by starting 2 quicker points (which is another thing that coach k is known for doing).
i don't see coach k going with a more "traditional" lineup at all. that works against both his defensive and offensive schemes. he doesn't even do that at duke if he's not forced to.

3 bigs, 3 distinctly different looks for their big (love, griff and AD). that's plenty of flexibility.

The roster: Bradley Beal, DeMarcus Cousins, Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, DeMar DeRozan, Andre Drummond, Kevin Durant, Kenneth Faried, Paul George, Blake Griffin, James Harden, Gordon Hayward, Kyrie Irving, Kyle Korver, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Chandler Parsons, Derrick Rose and Klay Thompson.

Roster to be pared down to 12 from those 19.

What are they showing? A full practice, a scrimmage, or something more structured with interviews and highlights?

On a different note, I really don't see how Rose should make this roster, unless he is 100%:

Here are my safe bets to be cut: DeRozan, Faried, Parsons; these guys are out just b/c there are too many locks ahead of them. The bold players are sure things.

Curry, Lillard, Rose
Harden, Thompson, Beal, Korver
KD, PG, GH
Love, BG, Cousins
Davis, Drummond

one of beal, Hayward or Korver will make the roster for floor spacing. So that leaves one spot:

Rose vs. Lillard

Who will get selected and who deserves to be selected?

You just cut Hayward and Korver and keep Lillard for floor spacing because he's a far better shooter than Hayward and more dynamic than Korver, and the height difference won't matter as much playing against international players and because Lillard is very athletic. And then keep Derrick.

I think they might keep Rose because both Lillard and Curry are horrible defenders.

Jimmy Butler is now on the practice squad. I edited my original post with the just-announced players.
