It sounds like Greg Monroe doesn't want to be here...
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nb ... /13094863/
Q: If you threw him a maximum deal you could end it right there, right?
A: I don't know about that. I don't even know if that's true.
Stan Van Gundy not sure if a Max contract offer would get Greg Monroe to sign in Detroit pretty much means he would prefer to play somewhere else.
Q: When you say no control, how are you convincing him? Recruiting him?
A: We have tried. ... We've tried to make him understand what we're trying to do and why we think he's an important part of it. But he's got some decisions to make, too. Part of it's to do with us, part of it has to do with his first four years here and everything else, and part of it has to do, I guess, with what he wants in the future, so we don't have a resolution on it right now.
Those answers from SVG means its pretty clear its not just about the money... but more about him being unhappy here.

My opinion isn't based on fact, but i think Monroe wants Smith gone before he signs long term.
That rumor came up and was denied publicly, but it was clear smith ruined any chemistry the team had last year, so i don't think Monroe wants to play with him. I can't say i blame him.

It sucks, but if he doesn't want to be here you have to move on... perhaps sign him to the most reasonable contract he will accept with the promise of a trade as soon as we're able... or try to work a sign and trade to a team he wants to go to.

You think Stan's gonna say: "yeah, if we gave him the max he'd stay?" It'll make him look like the cheap bad guy to the fans.

Sounds like a stale mate... If SVG can't get fair value in a S&T this could end up with Greg taking the QO.
Would like to see a leak on what has been offered from the Pistons so far.

Re: Its official - Greg Monroe doesn't want to be here...
In regards to the 1st question, SVG answered back in a way that every GM would respond if in that scenario. I'm pretty sure he does not want to give David Falk the impression in any way possible that we would be willing to give Moose the max. If he were to answer bck saying "yeah everything would be resolved if we gave him the max", what position would that put us in? We're playing with the cards we're dealt with and SVG has a God given poker face to all of this.
There is no need to read too much into what SVG is saying. This does not mean Monroe doesn't want to be here. SVG responded greatly to the questions thrown at him. He sounds confident and prepared and as a fan I couldn't be happier about how SVG is handling all of this.

If that's true though, doesn't it say more about how little SVG actually wants Monroe here?
Because if he really wanted Monroe over Smith, and dumping Smith was the only thing preventing him from getting Monroe signed longterm, wouldn't he have just taken the Kings offer and ended this already?
One thing I'm starting to think could be going on here is that Monroe isn't convinced that Stan actually wants him. If you're Monroe and think your GM is only trying to resign you just to trade you later (to a team you might not want to play for), wouldn't you think taking the QO might be better for you?
Think about it. He signs longterm here, plays 1 year, then gets traded next summer to a team he doesn't like and has to play there for 3 years. Or he takes the QO here, plays 1 year, then gets to choose where he wants to play for the next 4 years.
The latter seems better to me, if location is a main factor. And the longer this goes on with no better offers, if 12 mil/yr is all he's going to get from us, he might not get his max deal next summer either, but I'm sure he could get that same 12 mil/yr deal then if he wanted. So if you're Monroe, why take 12 mil/yr now for a team you might not want to play for, who also might trade you to a team you want to play for even less, when you could get 5 mil this year on the QO AND still get your 12 mil/yr deal next summer from the team of your choosing?
Of course there's risk involved with taking the QO, but there's also risk involved in signing here longterm if you don't want to play here, or are worried you are only being resigned to be traded somewhere else later.

Thought Detroit offered Monroe $12M per year.
I love SVG. He would make a great poker partner. He is not budging on the Monroe offer until someone presents Monroe with an offer sheet, and he is not taking “any” crap for Josh Smith.
Somehow I feel Dumars would’ve already traded Smith for peanuts.

If Monroe were just holding out for more money, don't you think Falk would've asked for the max by now?
It probably would've been the first thing he asked for when they entered negotiations - if Monroe really wanted to sign here. Falk would've said this is what we want... and presented terms for a max deal.
So if they told Stan that he would resign if offered the max, then wouldn't Stan be lying by saying he doesn't know if its true if they would take it?
And if they haven't asked for the max yet, all this time, then what are they holding out for?
If they aren't holding out for more money, then they are either holding out because he doesn't want to play here, or because they are waiting for Smith to be traded. Given that the Pistons have a deal to trade Smith and are refusing it, its probably not the latter.

I really don't think SVG would ever do that, and it's got nothing to do with how he personally feels about Greg Monroe — that's just a lousy way to treat an employee, and when Stan's wearing his GM hat, he's the boss and the players are his personnel. Who would ever sign with us again if Stan developed a reputation for screwing over his players like that? On the other hand, good business breeds good business, and part of being professional is doing what's best for both the company and the employee. It's not like Stan's low-balling Moose with an MLE offer, but this is a tough negotiation and he knows he holds most of the cards. It's Monroe's choice if he wants to bet on himself, play this year for the QO and then try to get a better deal as a UFA next summer, but leaving a reported guaranteed $60M on the table makes that a B-I-G bet.
In short, it's just business; no need to read too much into any of it or jump to conclusions.

Rumor from a semi-insider on our board:
Olynyk, James Young, Thad Young to DET, Monroe to BOS, Gerald Wallace and a 1st to PHI...

omg, I'd LOVE that deal. I like Thad and Olynyk a lot and like James Young's potential too.
How credible is this semi-insider?
That would be a nice haul for the Pistons to get out of Monroe. A really good starting stretch 4 in Thad, good young backup stretch 5 in Olynyk, AND a 1st rd pick G/F prospect in Young? Almost too good to be true, but I'd love it.

Wow! Even though we don't get a 3 in-return, that's actually good value for Monroe. Is Boston giving Monroe the max?

It is just business. Just like Monroe has the right to take the QO and leave us with nothing next summer, the Pistons also have the right to sign him and trade him next summer.
I don't see how that would look bad at all to other players. He signed Monroe, determined he wasn't a good fit, and then traded him.
Teams change their minds all the time on players. That's part of the business and players know that. If it was really an issue, wouldn't the Pistons signing of Smith last year and now trying to trade him a year later be the same thing?
I think players understand that nothing is guaranteed but the money. Unless they have a no trade clause, they know there is a chance they could be traded at any time.

Thad has the ability to play SF and Olynyk can play PF too, so we could even play Drummond/Olynyk/Thad up front together and have great shooters all over the place.
This would be an awesome deal.

I wouldn't even care if it was us giving up the pick, which I'm sure it'll be if that rumor is true. We'd be getting a nice return package for Moose, not to mention James Young has hella potential. Pull the trigger.
