Updated (P.3): Jordy signs extension - 4 years $39 million

Post#1 » by PkrsBcksGphsMqt » Thu Jul 24, 2014 8:24 pm

Things are slow around here so I figured I'd set up a poll and pose the question. I personally think we should let him walk if he won't settle for something less. I know others will disagree. Here is a list of the top 10 WRs by annual salary (source):

1. Calvin Johnson - 16.2 million
2. Larry Fitzgerald - 16.1 million
3. Percy Harvin - 12.9 million ( )
4. Mike Wallace - 12 million
5. Dwayne Bowe - 11.2 million
6. Vincent Jackson - 11.1 million
7. Brandon Marshall - 11 million
8. Andre Johnson - 9.7 million
9. Greg Jennings - 9 million
10. Victor Cruz - 8.6 million

I personally think Ted can replenish the WR corps better than any other position and it is essentially this organization's main competitive advantage (other than Rodgers). So we should not be signing any WR to a top 10 contract for the position.

I don't have a problem at all with us paying Jordy money competitive with those players if there is still money available to give to Cobb.

The money can be shifted around pretty creatively, obviously, but we are expected to have a little under $13,700,000 in cap room, according to the Packers SB Nation guys.

Where did he say this? Last I saw he said he wasn't concerned with the money since he could never spend the $12m he's making in his current contract. I think he's one of the most underrated WR's in this era and the chemistry he has with Rodgers can't be discounted. I would easily rank him above Greg Jennings and below Brandon Marshall, so $10m would be his "market value" in that sense.

This is all we have, from the ESPN article.

Nelson is seeking all of that -- and more. A source familiar with the negotiations said Nelson wants a deal worth at least $10 million per season. That would be a major increase from his current contract, which averages $4.2 million per season and ranks 34th among all NFL receivers. White was due to make $5 million this season.

I'd give him 10. He's worth it and 10 won't be in the top 10 in the position by next offseason.

Tough call since we have to pay Cobb too. I reluctantly say pay him.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Nelson is worth 10-13m a year and he deserves every penny. Do I want the Packers to pay Nelson that probably not. I would like to see what we get from our other WRs this year before I decide.

He deserves it. It's undeniable that him and Aaron have chemistry that you just cannot put into other receivers quite yet. I hope they can get creative and keep both him and Cobb.

He's making 3 mil in base this year with 1 mil in bonuses, so 4 mil.

If you give him another 4/40 and tack it on to this deal (and spread some money into this year), you get 5 years and $44 mil. That's right in between Andre Johnson and Victor Cruz, which is right where I think Jordy should be slotted.

Dude is a great player that doesn't get treated like it because he's white, and he has Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball (anyone could catch passes from Aaron Rodgers!).

I also pay Jordy over Cobb simply on injury issues. I would have preferred they tried to trade Cobb during the off-season, but I think the injury last year would have just killed his trade value.

The WR depth on this team has been awesome for years now, but ultimately Rodgers needs a guy he can go to in tough situations that he trusts. The best man for that job is Jordy Nelson - pay him!

Pay him. The chemistry him and Rodgers have is ridiculous. Some of the throws Rodgers makes to him and are right on the money, making the throw and catch look as easy as of they were just two guys playing catch, are so fun to watch. Letting him go isn't an option IMO. Plus, I'd **** hate to see him end up playing for a division rival. Marshall/Jeffery/Nelson would be deadly. Or even Megatron/Nelson would suck to face twice a season or even three times depending on any potential playoff matchup.

The Bears are not giving Nelson $10 million a year.

I don't care if we pay him or not. All I care about is if we aren't going to pay him, then trade him for a 1st round pick NOW!

Didn't think of that. Ok, you sold me. If nothing else, we get a nice compensation pick for him in 2016.

Adams is very Nelson/boldin-like in his own respect... Pretty excited about him.

Let him walk, this is the precise reason Jones should have been kept in the fold.

I don't think anyone on offense, besides ARod, should be getting $10mil/year. Let him go.

What does Jones have to do with Nelson given Jordy is a vastly superior receiver? Jones can be replaced via the draft, Ted has shown that since being named GM.

To me, if hypothetically it came down to say both Nelson and Cobb wanting roughly equal cash and Ted felt he could only afford to keep one of the two, i'd pay Jordy over Cobb.

Jordy is much taller, stronger, and unlike Cobb, he can play both outside and in the slot. He's also been very durable. The only caveat is that he's older, but since he's 28 instead of in his 30's, i'm not worried that age would likely cause decline before the contract ended. Not a really easy call though.
