He hasn't shown anything to warrant a hefty paycheck due to not getting enough opportunity, so he decides to invest in his future by signing a short, cheap contract with a team where playing time is guaranteed.

He'll play his heart out and put up good numbers, decline the player option next summer and collect the money in 2015-16.

He saw what Detroit offered Meeks and signed right away.

Davis is just 25 years old and has been productive when given minutes throughout the course of his four-year NBA career. He has had stints with the Toronto Raptors and Memphis Grizzlies, with career averages of 6.9 points and 4.1 rebounds, and he still has a lot of room for growth. When he started 24 games in the 2012-13 season, he averaged 12.4 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks, and had a number of impressive performances.

While the Lakers’ frontcourt is somewhat crowded with Carlos Boozer, Julius Randle, Jordan Hill and Ryan Kelly alongside Davis, the Lakers’ front office assured the big man that he would have an opportunity to earn minutes in L.A. Davis is thrilled to join the Lakers, and he believes this will be an excellent opportunity for him to showcase his game and help a team that’s trying to turn things around after a franchise-worst 27-55 record last season.

“I think it will be a great opportunity for me playing wise and I like the pieces that they have in place there,” Davis told Basketball Insiders. “Obviously, there’s the connection with my agent [Rob Pelinka] and Kobe [Bryant] and some of the guys who are there, so that had something to do with it. But I just thought that this would be a good opportunity for me to come in here, help this team win, compete and have sort of a new start to get rejuvenated

Can Ed Davis do the things Pau Gasol did? This is a simple question for the Lakers. during this rehabilitation period the Lakers need to start bringing along talent for the next generation post Kobe Bryant period. What is the future Laker team going to look like and is Ed Davis apart of this scheme. I do not know and Laker fans need to ask Mitch, Jimmy and the crew in the front office where are the Lakers going or are they interested in providing good Hollywood entertainment and drama.

 Davis is not good enough to even be in Paus shadow. Paus greatest strength is his intelligence and great understanding of the game. One of the best passing big men of all time. That's something that cant be taught.

David is your typical big man catch the ball and finish player.

I haven't seen much of Davis other than the highlights posted.
From what I see, he needs the ball right near the rim to finish.
I haven't seem much of any post moves. Not much passing ability right now.
He is a young big who is very raw. Pau was a polished veteran big with excellent Bball IQ and and offensive threat in scoring and passing.
Davis's niche may have to be on the defensive end, working hard to learn how to defend and rebound.
And slowly, work on his post moves on offense.

It's funny Pelinka help Mitch build this team. But I always liked Davis even in Toronto. Going to Memphis was a set back development wise. But he knows he's gonna get minutes here, the rest is up to him.

I'm with you Deep, his contract to me indicates his character. He wants to be a Laker and wants to get minutes. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in the purple and gold.

From what I've seen I can already tell he is going to thrive with Lin finding him in the paint, or pnr. His length is the biggest benefit, he has good timing on his put backs...if we can turn him into a dennis rodman type of player, that's where I think he can thrive, and where he can build up his value when he reenters free agency. I think Byron is gonna utilize him well. But Davis has got to be a defensive minded player, and a great re-bounder if he wants to get to that next level.

liked him a lot with the Raps. I think he should play C as his per is much higher at that position than PFs.

If he can replicate Hills like production, it could lead to alot of opportunities as I can see us trading Hill sooner.

Ed says 'Umm' more than anyone in the history of human vocalization...

That said, I'm glad we picked him up, and I'm excited to see what he does with the PT in LA!
