Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
i'm not too heartbroken that i missed the charlotte phish show tonight. they didnt play anything that i'm upset that i missed other than piper and reba. i streamed the 2nd set and it was OK, nothing worth crying about. not a fan of trey guitar tone the past 2 years. always sounds like he is out of key.
also not too heartbroken about missing steely dan at the biltmore next week. while that setting will be amazing, it seems the band and setlist are nearly identical to last tour. i was hoping they would mix up the set list a little from last year.
pretty crazy that my two favorite bands of all-time are playing in NC in the same week and i am going to neither show.

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
I will see Lee "Scratch" Perry in a Latvian festival the next weekend. was a bit surprised to find out that someone of his stature would visit Latvia in his age.
I also attended a very huge, mainstream festival last weekend ago (it's in Latvia, yet is basically the biggest one in Northern Europe). Besides some today's popular acts like Bastille, Ellie Goulding, The Kooks or whoever I saw Kraftwerk and Just Blaze.
Just Blaze's set was just bonkers. I had shivers when the beat for Simon Says and Public Service Announcement (Jay-Z) dropped. Obviously, he played club music as well but he returned for some random old school classics at the end as well. A great set, all in all. Really made me think about traveling to Europe next summer and catching one of those big European hip hop festivals. Looking at line-ups for festivals like Hip Hop Kemp in Czech Republic... daaaamn... I wouldn't know how to see every act I want to see. I love all kinds of music but hip-hop still is the one I know in and out and which somehow is closest to my heart. It would be something different.
I can listen to Kraftwerk from time to time so this isn't me not being ready for them. But it did feel like some 80s Eastern Germany mass brain-washing event. Just thousands of people standing straight up and watching Russian words on the screen with their 3D glasses on. The 80s animations they have for their songs were also fascinating. An interesting experience nevertheless.

cool shows, lamar. yeah, kraftwerk are known for that sort of show. i'd love to see it while they're still touring and making music.
last week I saw the japanese band OOIOO. i didn't even know they were still a band until i saw that they were coming. i knew about them around like 2001 as splinter projects from the boredoms and liked their music. they have a new album and from my experience it is just as fine as their older stuff. when they broke out into one of my favorite nigerian afrobeat songs in the encore, my head nearly exploded from the coincidence. great show.
i'm hoping to get back in town at the right time around labor day so i can see cut chemist and dj shadow do an afrika bambaataa tribute show.

wow!!!
now that definitely sounds like something you must see. I hope I do see some great turntablism artist one day performing live.
even though I might be one of the people who Shadow addressed when ranting that either "you're a fan of the album [Endtroducing - which is top3 all-time any genre for me] or the artist", I still can't imagine a DJ I'd rather see live, even though I know that it's not like he'll go all "The Number Song" on us.

OT - I've always enjoyed going back and watching this 3-minute long excerpt from the documentary, Scratch. such a chilling scene and wise words by Shadow.

I ended up taking my 4 year old to the Panthers Fan Fest instead of going to the Phish show. We went last year and had a blast, so figured I'd catch Phish the next tour. Going to see Umphrey's McGee Thursday, which should satisfy my jam band needs.
I love the band but have never been one to track setlists.

Re: OT: What Are You Listening to Now?
i am not a huge umphrey's mcgee fan. i have a couple of their albums. but they rock some covers with the best of them. and they can definitely shred.
i dig this version they of chicago's 25 or 6 to 4

they also do some cool mashups, like thriller/another brick in the wall, the singing for the jackson parts are obviously off, but otherwise, its brilliant.

regardless, i think you probably made the right choice to go see them over phish and it pains me to say that. haha.

haha, what exactly did you not understand?
btw, I love Chicago's 25 or 4 to 6. probably mainly because of Kblaze's mix of Chris Mullin:

additionally, while i'm going through my soundcloud likes, this is one of the best 2010s updates of 70s soul i have ever heard. reworking of an isley brothers tune. https://soundcloud.com/follow-me-1/isley-brothers-prize
