OT Downtown Hotels/Bars/Areas
Some friends and I are doing a Red Wings / Lions weekend in October and I was hoping to get some recommendations from you fine folks.
Any recommendations for a good cheap hotel close to either stadium and bars in the area would be greatly appreciated. Also any steer clear zones would be nice since we're a bunch of gullible Australians/Canadians.
Also, which coney island place is legit?
cheers

Re: OT Downtown Hotels/Bars/Areas
The eastern market is pretty cool and they tailgate there befor the lions games.
As for coney islands, the two most famous downtown would be lafayette coney island and american coney island, and there right next store to one another and have been rivals for a long time.
Anywhere downtown isnt really bad,its when you go past that and enter the surrounding suburbs, thats what you wanna steer clear of..
As for hotels,I usually stay at MGM casino, might be nice for you guys, because when you get back you can do alittle gambling,drinking,clubbing..right inside and they have pretty good food in their restaurant.

Corktown is cool for laid back but rowdy drinking and eating, has some music venues and old Irish bars (plus more touristy 'Irish' bars if that's more your scene). Some of the city's better known newer restaurants are there too. It's contiguous with downtown to the northwest (up Michigan Ave).
As for safety, I usually try to downplay the danger because people from the suburbs often treat Detroit like some kind of Ebola outbreak zone but you do have to watch yourself if you're walking outside of the main streets. Downtown is pretty safe overall, and in most areas you'd consider going to no one's going to walk up and rob you if you're around big streets or popular places. Just don't get too cocky; call a cab before you leave the bar, don't get drunk and try to wander your way back to the hotel, don't take your iphone into the alley to have a long chat with the wife, etc.

Im thinking one of the casinos might be the best bet.
I've been out to eat/drink a few times in corktown and enjoyed it, i've just never actually stayed down there.
Thanks for the tips.

Like Kurtis said, I would recommend the MGM especially if you are going to be with friends. Lots of attractions near it aswell

Always enjoyed the authentic Mexican in Mexican village... Greek town is worth it.
Downtown Detroit is alive in the summertime with free concerts & sports (not just pro.. check out the competition for softball tournaments)... these idiots that try to put down the city are out of touch with the real inner city area... let us know about your experience.

You should stop by Bucharest right downtown off Park Ave for a beer and a Shwarma during the day before or after a game. They are awesome. Actually, I should be in Detroit visiting from Florida about that time. I could give you details on any local bands playing around that time. For me, I do visit many dive bars like the Old Miami etc in not so nice areas most people are afraid to frequent. It ain't as bad as the news makes it out to be.

I second Bucharest. I live on campus at Wayne State University during the school year and their Bucharest Shwarma's are def. something special. The food down at Mexican town is also very good, esp that cake they have.

Mexico town is great as I really dig Xochimilco's. Also, Greek town is some fine dining to boot. If OP give's me dates you will be in town, I may be able to give info on some great live music.

Once I hear who is booked where, I will let you know. I know musicians up there as my mother was a Jazz/Blues singer for years while I played in Blues, Metal and rock bands. I will send you a PM sometime in September. Cheers - BMP
