Manu will not play in Worlds

Post#1 » by Nolan » Tue Jul 29, 2014 1:31 am

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2014/07/28/spurs-deny-ginobilis-world-cup-bid/

The Spurs have sent Manu Ginobili a letter denying him permission to participate in the FIBA Basketball World Cup later this summer, Express-News columnist Buck Harvey reported on Monday.

Spurs general manager R.C. Buford cited an eight-week recovery span for the stress fracture in Ginobili’s lower right fibula, which was discovered during exit physicals after the team crushed Miami in the Finals to clinch their fifth championship. With the Spurs playing their last game on June 15, that would have come perilously close to the start of the World Cup, which runs from Aug. 30 through Sept 14 in Spain.

Ginobili, who turned 37 on Monday, was re-examined in Argentina last week, with national team doctor Diego Grippo noting improvement but describing the results as “inconclusive.”

Just confirmation of what we all already knew. I'm sure Manu's not happy about this but its the right move for him and the team.

Poor Manu, but the injury is what it is.

This gives me mixed feelings. One one hand, the injury is quite serious and he shouldn't be rushing the rehab to play for another team (technically) when he has a contract with the Spurs. On another hand, Manu's done so much for the Spurs over the years, it's hard to think this was management's decision alone. I'm guessing the FO denied him the permission so Manu's home country would understand and accept him not participating more easily. If that's not the case, it's a pretty cold move by the Spurs, albeit a justified one.

I'm sure Manu isn't happy about not playing, but there must be a part of him that understands this isn't a horrible scenario.

Manu really wanted to play but the front office had the final say and they said no. I guess you could call it cold but it's for his own good and for the good of the team.

Spurs needs to do what's the best for the organization. That was absolutely the right decision.

Yeah, Manu has done a lot for San Antonio, but San Antonio has done a lot for him as well. I mean, SA allowed him to play for the NT in the past and got back hurt and totally gassed to play a full season. And it has happened more than once.

SA made sure to include a "veto" clause in his last contract to avoid this kind of thing. In the end, It's SA that pays his salary and his medical treatment, not the ARG basketball Federation.
Shaq on Duncan:SA won because of TD, a guy I could never break.I could talk trash to Ewing, get in D-Rob's face, get a rise out of Mourning, but when I went at Tim he’d look at me like he was bored and say:“Hey,Shaq, watch this shot right off the glass.”

Sucks for Manu :( but life sucks sometimes. Even for famous people. I expect him to man up and be ready for next year.

Good. I get that they value playing for their country, but hows about saving your 37 year old body for the team that plays you millions of dollars a year to contribute for them?

So maybe after that PG injury Manu will appreciate/respect the teams decision a little more.

I was thinking the same thing. Although, Manu has already accomplished everything he needs to in the NBA and Internationally so I can understand him wanting to represent his country for sentimental reasons. I'm just glad they told him no and Kwahi opted out.

Parker and Manu will be coming in fully rested, that's huge. I expect Parker to be much better next year since he won't be dealing with as many sprains, contusions, etc.

Then it's not a specific Veto clause being included specifically in Manu's contract

Cuban then reiterated his longstanding criticism of the NBA's agreement with FIBA, which stipulates that only players themselves can refuse their country's invite to play for the national team except in the event of a "reasonable medical concern." The San Antonio Spurs invoked that clause this week to prevent Manu Ginobili from representing Argentina at FIBA's upcoming Basketball World Cup thanks to the lingering effects of a stress fracture.

Not it's not. I thought it was, but it applies to any player in the league.
