Sorta OT: Kings owners in talks to buy Sac Republic FC

Post#1 » by Wolfay » Sun Aug 3, 2014 10:37 pm

This isn't basketball related, but it is Kings and Sacramento related, and I'm mod, so I can do whatever the hell I want! Anyway, this is a huge development in our bid for MLS expansion. The biggest thing lacking at this point are deep-pocketed owners, but that very well may be changing!

Even as they begin building a new downtown arena, the owners of the Kings are in discussions to expand their footprint in the region by buying Sacramento Republic FC – the minor league soccer team selling out games locally since April.

There is no agreement in place yet between the Kings and the Republic, but the Kings owners are interested in the idea of investing in the franchise and elevating it to the level of Major League Soccer, America’s premier soccer league, according to sources with knowledge of the talks. They declined to speak publicly because the deal isn’t completed.

This week, Kings President Chris Granger will travel to Portland to meet with MLS officials along with current Republic owner Warren Smith. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is also expected to attend the meeting, scheduled for Wednesday.

I thinks this speaks a lot about how much Vivek and the rest of the Kings ownership believe in this city, and don't think for second that Mayor Johnson is done doing work after saving the Kings!

By the way, I strongly encourage everybody to attend a Sac Republic game if any of you haven't. It's quite the experience!

I've seen PDA at a game.

I actually enjoy going to soccer matches a bit more than NBA games. It's a different experience.

I've been keeping up with Sac Republic FC, daily, via google news. I was excited to hear Mayor KJ, and Kings ownership were looking to get involved. Soccer is on the rise in America, and the MLS is growing. This would be huge for the city of Sacramento. We have the fans to support an MLS franchise. I haven't always been the biggest soccer fan, but when it comes to team USA and Sacramento...Hell yeah!

It's a good investment.. A MLS team will appreciate more than getting a MLB or NHL team due to the expected increasing interest in the sport in this country

Every time I'm at raging waters and going off the cliff hanger I get a gorgeous view of the field. Doesn't look MLS standard so its going to take partnership to build a facility in addition to the arena
