Rasmus Clashing With Seitzer? My Way or the Highway

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Mon Aug 4, 2014 4:33 pm

http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/scott_macarthur/?id=458658
What's clear was that the discussion Kevin Seitzer was having with Colby Rasmus was animated. Seitzer, leaving not much room between him and his protégé, was moving his hands theatrically, speaking intently. To the casual observer, looking over every now and then, it appeared that Seitzer was doing a lot more of the talking than Rasmus.

This has been a difficult year for Rasmus and it couldn't have come at a worse time. He's assuredly headed to free agency for the first time in his career, the Blue Jays uninterested in bringing him back – certainly uninterested in issuing Rasmus a qualifying offer worth more than $14-million – and the feeling, it's believed, is mutual.

I read that entire article and for me, what's glaring is the need for Colby Rasmus to give his head a shake.

His complaint about his stance is that his hands always come out anyways, so instead of having the bat closer to his body, he holds it out over the plate.

Anyways, like I say with golf, if you're not hitting the ball where you want, you got to adjust. Make the necessary changes, and if it doesn't feel right (advice from a pro), then you're probably doing something right.

I find Rasmus' stance and the way he holds the bat is perfect for say beer league slo-pitch, but were in the big leagues now. His stance will never allow him to hit anything inside with consistency, as well as anything with break or movement anywhere in the zone. To me, his swing screams I hit the fastball and only the fastball.

Your thoughts. Should Colby be brought back? Should he go to Free Agency? Should he Change His Stance..because obviously he can't do much worse than he is now!

Colby's dumb as rocks. He's a good CF and has some power. He's a guy I could see hitting under .200 in a couple years time when his bat slows down even a bit. A Dan Uggla like fall off is what I mean.

I would not re-sign him at this point especially with Gose putting up a .360 OBP vs. RHP and costing nothing.

Last week MacArthur said that there is a 99.8% chance that Rasmus is not back with the Jays next year.

He also gave those same odds to Janssen and Morrow not being with the Jays in 2015.

The only one that surprised me was Janssen.

I don't think Casey will be back either. California guy about to get paid pretty well in the offseason. We can't compete.

If we don't make the post-season many will not be returning next season.

Even with a post season appearance, I don't see the Jays bringing any impending free agent back, or picking up the options on Morrow, Santos, and Happ. I doubt Rogers is just being cheap for 2014. There is likely a long-term cheapness about to rear its head, and we will slowly start to see declining payroll year to year. We just have to hope the teams wins in spite of it.

As for Rasmus, they shouldn't sign him long-term. I'd be fine with bringing him back on a one year deal to boost his value for next season, but if the relationship is already damaged, then it's likely a foregone conclusion that Gose starts in CF next season.

colby's a habitual stance-changer anyhow, and he did have decent success with his hands over the plate in the second half of last year (not reflected in the picture below), so at this point it seems like it's all upstairs

This has all the same signs as a bad divorce. Each side knows it's over, and it's only a matter of time. Colby is the only one who has anything to lose at this point, and the Jays were banking on that being a motivating factor. Unfortunately, they didn't account for Colby not being smart enough to realize that.

There's a reason the Cardinals gave him up for cheap. The guy is not receptive to instruction at all. Sure he's had some good success, but he's had some real failure too. He's not a guy whose track record justifies obstinacy.

If he ever changes to a real stance, he could turn into a monster because after all, he does have a lot of talent. But with his head, I doubt it ever happens. And I think the Blue Jays have run out of patience, and justifiably so.

Hes made a ton of changes to his stance on both teams. So hes pretty receptive to instruction this has more to do with struggling/injuries being a nuisance.

Also it doesnt take a genius to see hes losing out on $. Fans will call athletes stupid whenever they can lol

Couldn't have been more obvious. And with his struggles this year (despite his 97 wRC+ not being far off his career 102 wRC+ at all) and his impending FA (with Rogers almost certainly going cheap in CF instead of bringing him back), there's a great opportunity right now to take a few unwarranted shots at him.

Hard to see the Jays wasting their money (if there even is any to spend) on a closer whose velocity has dropped over 3 MPH in 3 years with a history of shoulder problems.

I would if Gose was his replacement (and he will be).

Nor would I, just doesn't get on base often enough or play CF well enough. And unlike Randle, I'll take a small downgrade in CF if it helps us in other areas.

He's made a number of dumb changes to his stance, I'll grant you that. The picture above shows you all you need to know in that respect. I highly doubt anyone told him he should literally put his hands above the plate.

Colby has to be one of the easiest outs and most anti-clutch in the game, he's so bad at the plate. Its no wonder they couldn't deal him at the deadline.

I think Zaun said Janssen won't be back as well. Would suck to lose him.

And yeah, it feels like there's virtually no chance the Jays re-sign Rasmus.

Janssen's nearing 32, and his arm isn't long for this world. I'll be happy for him when he gets overpaid somewhere else, but not with the Jays.
