Red Smoke is my favorite downtown BBQ place but I think it depends on what type of BBQ you prefer. Red Smoke has great pulled pork but if I wanted brisket Slow's is definitely better. Never tried Rub's though.

Heres a site that has a really good list of places to check out,it gives you the address, contact info, and a rating system.http://www.urbanspoon.com/n/19/1816/Det ... estaurants.

I actually love downtown det,so much to do,alot of places to visit and see if your into checking out buildings and architectura.

Bucharest Grill is amazing as mentioned. I used to walk there for lunch from time to time.

If you want to really have fun, go to Cliff Bells down the street. Pricey, but awesome. Jazz bar, you do need a reservation on the weekend, though.

Tommy's down the street from Joe Louis (They do bus runs for Wings games, I think) on 3rd is great. Very Detroit place, sports culture and the like, there's a picture of Bill Bonds flipping you off at the bar. Turkey burgers are amazing along with the fries. Staff there is quite cool.

Mudgie's in Corktown is great, very Michigan type place. Good for lunch, sandwiches and they sell Michigan products. Slow's is overrated, can't say it enough.

The Coneys, both are the same ingredient wise. If you go to Lafayette, bring cash, they don't take cards. American does. Lafayette is tiny and cramped, whereas American is spacious.

I didnt recommend famous daves,I gave MY opinion that famous daves has the best bbq ribs in mi to another poster who I was having a conversation with, just because its a chain dosent make what I said to be untrue.I also gave pretty good recommendations to the poster of this thread more than once and was liked by pretty much everyone who commented on here,so I dont see the point of your post.

If you pass by West Dearborn, I always have to stop by Millers bar. Best damned burgers around.

I live a few miles down the road from there and stop in twice a month, there burgers are so good, they only have onions and pickels as sides for the burger, but because the burgers are soooo good they need nothing else.

Heres a few others

Redcoat Tavern
zingermans deli
the oyster bar
blimpy burger
Theres also a brewery in flint area that I go to,we always get a BIG plate of nachos and enjoy the beer.

Well fair enough on the conversation piece - I disagree about Famous Dave's being the best BBQ restaurant in Michigan vehemently though...or even the best ribs for that matter, have you tried ribs at the Kit Kat Klub in Macomb?

Not saying I don't like Famous Dave's but I have yet to meet a chain that has the best of anything food-wise.

No,I have never tried the ribs at kit kat klub, but I have been to alot of rib places in my lifetime, and for me the ribs at famous daves are delicious,I like there rubs and even buy them at kroger to put on mine when I grill. There is a couple of soul food places around mi that had some good ribs to,also the bone yard and mr.chicken.

Magic Stick was always a fun bar to go to with the Midnight night bowling thing going on. Not sure if they do that anymore. I always had fun going to St. Andrews Hall for shows etc.

Nowadays, I got to neighborhood dives to watch blues bands jam in not so great neighborhoods sometimes off the Cass Corridor.
