Shawn Marion
Just read the pacers are making a strong push to sign Marion. We could only really give him a 2 million contract unless we wanted to use the disabled player money which would put us over the tax line. So that brings me to my question if they do go over the tax I would ask why would we go over for him an not for lance?

We're not going into the tax.

Without using the DPE, we can only offer the vet minimum, which means he'd probably go to Cleveland for the same.
We could offer more money by waiving some combo of Scola (clear an additional $3m), Whittington or Sloan (clear respective $915k for each of these two waived).
We're already about $2m under the tax, and would have to waive at least one person to clear a roster spot if we sign Marion before training camp. Ultimately, we'd like to keep $1m under the tax to be safe, too.

Re: Shawn Marion
Would LOVE to sign Shawn Marion. He'd be an awesome fill in at SF for the team.
Probably would need the DPE though.

I wonder if he'd do a 2 year deal. Would love to also have him next year when PG comes back.

Re: Shawn Marion
You think Marion wants to go to a team with zero title hopes? I don't know which way he's leaning but I'd be surprised if he went to Indiana. Maybe he just wants to play a lot.

You need to learn how to post a little more gently. Until you do, the point you try to make comes across solely as trolling, instead of the belief that Marion would prefer to play for less money, but for a better chance at a ring; which is a valid point. However, instead, you come across poorly.
Thanks for visiting, though.

Can't do a 2 year deal with the DPE. One year only, and for one player only. Can't be split.

Well he did play college ball in Indiana, plus he wore 31 because of Reggie Miller. Needless to say he watched a lot Pacer games as a fan and probably developed some sentimental value for the Blue 'n Gold in the process. It's probably the only reason Indy is still in the conversation.

Wonder if Dallas would be interested in a S&T, or not. They might take Watson or Copeland off our hands.
Also, is there any way to use one of our TPE's?

Re: Shawn Marion
This is kind of a headscratching choice for you guys.
Other than filling a void at SF, Trix just doesn't have a decent enough offensive game away from the basket that will complement Hibbert and West. And his defense has regressed to the point that he can only defend face and post-up PFs which is great when trotting a small line-up. He really came in handy against guys like Blake Griffin, Randolph and Aldridge but not so much with KD, LeBron or Paul.
Anyway, if he was backing up the 4 and 3 (in that order), I can see this working.

Ahhhh. Well in that case it makes some sense. Not sure if that's a factor for him now, but maybe it is. The Pacers need him more than anybody else, I suppose.

They renounced their Bird rights to Marion to sign Parsons and Devin Harris. They then used their room exception to sign Jameer Nelson. At this point, they can only S&T Marion if he signs a vet minimum contract, (or if they somehow dipped back underneath the salary cap and then used cap space to S&T him) which we could just sign with us or Cleveland, hypothetically, instead.
So, no.

Re: Shawn Marion
I am lukewarm on Marion, as the Pacers need to have a more offensively aggressive wing. But with Brooks reportedly signing with Olimpia Milano, there is not so many options left in the market. I still like Beasley but I don't think Bird wants him.

Would you consider a Mekel + S&T Marion for Ian?
We could really use a actual backup C and you could use Marion to fill the void of PG

No. You can't S&T Marion right now without using cap space, which you don't have. You renounced Marion's bird rights to use your cap space to sign Parsons and Harris. At this point, you can only sign Marion to a vet minimum salary, same as we can. At that point, there's no reason to muddy it up and add a 4th or 5th PG.

Re: Shawn Marion
Is Marion really that much better than Rasual Butler? I can't fault them for investigating everything but, I'd rather they develop Solomon Hill.

Yes.
Much better player. However, Butler is probably the better locker room leader.

Re: Shawn Marion
According to the wiretap, Marion is expected to sign with the Cavs.
No surprise. At this point in his career, I'd do the same if I were him, choosing a shot at another title over over money.
In the previous reports, it was said that the Pacers are interested in Jordan Hamilton and Jordan Crawford. Jordan Hamilton will just provide depth, he's no starter material, and kinda duplicates Solomon Hill IMO. I'd rather take Singleton then.
Jordan Crawford is a good option but then again, he's a combo guard and we have players who can do that. Had we not signed Stuckey, I would want him for Indy.

Re: Shawn Marion
I'd imagine that we might be more along the lines of using the DPE in a trade for a guy in the last year of his deal. Maybe we waive Scola, and look to take on the last year of someone for a pick?
