Well it was a great PGA tournament yesterday with multiple people gunning for the title. Plenty of drama.
The other majors this year were a bit of a let down on Sunday.
The Masters was a two man race, that Bubba took over early on the back nine.
US Open, through no fault of its own, lost its lustre on Sunday due to Kaymer running away with it.
British Open, Rory was in full control on Sunday.
Tiger in contention adds an extra appeal to Majors but is not necessary. But what makes a major great is a great competitive battle. I believe it was either 2010 or 2011 that had amazing Sunday rounds in every major.
But sometimes it can't be controlled. While Tiger's runaway at the 97 Masters, 2001 US Open and the 2001 British were historic days, they lacked entertainment value. Instead people remember his great battles against guys who stepped it up that week -- the 2001 PGA vs Bob May, the 2008 US Open vs Rocco Mediate, the 2009 PGA loss vs YE Yang.
It had been similar for Rory -- his 3 first major wins were not that entertaining on Sunday. He walked away from the field in the 2011 US Open, the 2012 PGA, and was comfortably in front at the 2014 British all day. It was great to see him have to compete and pull it out.
