He's not realized his potential, nor has he even progressed to the level we would have expected at this point, yet he is a primo defensive player - at third base anyways - and has great upside. Whether he realizes that or not is another matter. Then, there is his health, a propensity to injuries that might amount to serious bad luck - it's not all because of his past tendency to go crashing into things. His thumb injuries suggest a possible batting approach issue, which should be curable, but oblique injuries are another matter. He would have every reason to consider his own vulnerability and leave some money on the table to lock in financial security and stay in Toronto where he will always earn some endorsement money by virtue of being a Canadian regular with a strong, somewhat marketable personality.

Like I said, this would be a tough one for both sides, and maybe going to arbitration with him is the better path.

I don't see any particular urgency to commit long term. He's clearly injury prone, and when he is on the field he puts up average at best offensive production for 3B.

Incredible the amount of time he has missed. This has become a regular pattern now. Time for the Jays to look at another long-term option at third base. I hope Lawrie is shopped in the off-season and traded to the highest bidder. No point in having this guy on your roster when you can never count on the guy to be healthy. It messes the whole flow of things when you are always looking forward to him coming back from the DL, only for him to be on the DL again. Guy has missed 40% of his games so far in his career. Enough is enough. Time for this organization to go in a different direction.

Lawrie is an iron man compared to Morrow. Maybe the Blue Jays training staff sucks.

Just a few days before he came back, I saw video of his rehab stint in Fla., showing him doing short agility sprints, going up to a pylon, pivoting 90 degress, on to the next pylon, etc. Like a football type drill. Made me think he was working hard, keeping his body sharp. Then this injury. You really do have to question the Jays training methods.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

There is next to no chance the Jays cut bait with a player that's a) Canadian, b) young, c) cheap, and d) pretty good already. I just hope they don't commit to him long term, because he is injury-prone and a bit of a clown to boot.

He plays like a maniac. That's good in some ways; it's very bad in others, such as keeping one's body from spontaneously combusting.

Same thing has happened with Bryce Harper...giving 110% is great, except when your muscles can only manage 100%.
