So the big risk you are taking is that fourth year. It's safe to assume he'll be fine the next two seasons, barring injury. The two years after that he will probably decline significantly, like Nene did this last season.

So we've got another Nene-like contract.

Yeah, it sucks. But I'd still rather have Gortat than Monroe, so...

Nahh. I project his production to be solid to improving in efficiency over the next two years.

Last year was his first here. He, Wall, Beal and with TA or Otto are just going to get more in sync.

I see a solid 3 years with leveling after 2. Flat for the 3rd before I would expect any declining to start. And even then it might not decline much in that 4th.

I expect closer to his '11-'12 production next 2 years.

And Gortat's body type and training dedication projects well. He isn't a heavy big. He is a lean strong big with nimble feet. And watch how he sets a pick. He gets his hip and shoulder out so his knees are not exposed. Guess he needs to remind Nene about that. Not having proper pick setting form is how Nene exposed his knee to the MCL tear.

Ambassador Gortat

He really does have what it takes to be a vet team leader. He talks a lot about getting on Wall and Beal and reminding them of what it takes to be your best, even if its going to break some eggs in the process. He isn't afraid to play that role. He isn't afraid to speak up. And he has the personality to walk that line of carrot and stick. A coaching right hand. A likable character who is fun and serious. But very competitive and goal focused.

That's worth a few extra bucks.

Look at the roster. He is that guy right now. He is their KG type vet that pushes the team forward.
Nene can be that as well but we question how long Nene will be here. Maybe he stays past his current contract or maybe he is gone this year or next. We don't know. But we know Gortat is locked in for 5 years.

TA played that role some,be it more quietly, but we don't know about him even this year.
Webby played that role, but he is an injury concern. Nice to have both Webby and Gortat doing it.
Okafor played that role, but he is gone do to injury. Shipped off to some witness protection program.
A Miller helps, but he is quiet and he is only here one more year. But he will help Wall this next year.
Big Cheese played that role, but he has a chronic knee and is probably done.
Gooden helps, but again, we only know we have him this next year.

This is way Gortat was such a priority. Its not just that he was a top big in this FA market. It was also who he is to this young Wizards core of Wall, Beal and Otto. And how badly they need a center that works with Wall and Beal. Its all of it.

And that is worth the 12M over 5 years. Getting him back stabilizes the team. Wall has his post target and the team has a rock solid Ambassador Gortat as a vet leader to push the team forward. He has goals. He wants to get back to the finals. And he communicates that. And he knows what kind of work the team has to put in to get there and he will help push them forward.

Ambassador Gortat and John Wall would be my 2014/15 Team Captains

I don't think Gortat would say "I think he's an average player who doesn't have what it takes".

I'm kind of hoping he's seen more than we have, there are other guys he could've mentioned but didn't.

Ariza made it a point to talk up Otto as well in his exit interview. He said "that kid is really good" or something to that effect. And he didn't sound like he was just saying it to say it. Wall has talked him up also and said he's been really impressive in practice.

I don't know why you guys are assuming Porter is some scrub just because Wittman didn't force him into the rotation. There are many different reasons why a player may not get minutes, it doesn't automatically mean they suck.

Porter was a consensus top 3-5 overall pick, former Big East POY.. he has game.

Hahaha thanks for the video!

On topic as others have said I think Gortat's production is only going to go up. You have to think he and NeNe didn't even play a full season of games together and their chemistry on the court will only go up. As well as obviously with Wall and Beal and such.

Just want to throw some props at the Gortat signing.

The first of the signing that started a great off season.

So anybody that has been here a while knows that I'm a huge athletics nut...and being Jamaican by birth (876 baby!) it goes without question that Usain Bolt is by far my favorite athlete. So when I was watching the Warsaw meet last week, as is the custom now, they always bring Bolt into the building with some gimmick to introduce him to the crowd. So I was watching him being brought in atop a Humvee and thought...awesome. But then my attention was focused on the driver...that mofo looks kinda familiar...who the f*ck is that...I know that beard...MUTHA F*CKA IT'S GORTAT...MY MAN MARCIN BABY............F*CK YEAH!!!!

Hammer commenting on how much different the first practice was.

Way more serious.
They even prepared themselves for practice.

Good stuff. Great signs.

OH Yeah. This is Stage 4... Sounds like a truly professional team
