Re: RealGM WizBoard Poetry, Lyrics, & similar Shenanigans Th
For those of you wondering just what a "sestina" is, here a wonderful example by Dante, and it's beautifully translated by the late James Schuyler, one of my favorite American poets of last part of the xxth century:
I have reached, alas, the long shadow
and short day of whitening hills
when color is lost in the grass.
My longing, all the same, keeps green
it is so hooked in the hard stone
that speaks and hears like a woman.
In that same way this new woman
stands as cold as snow in shadow,
less touched than if she had been stone
by the sweet time that warms the hills
and brings them back from white to green,
dressing them in flowers and grass.
Who, when she wreathes her hair with grass,
thinks of any other woman?
The golden waves so mix with green
that Love himself seeks its shadow
that has me fixed between small hills
more strongly than cemented stone.
More potent than a precious stone,
her beauty wounds, and healing grass
cannot help; across plains and hills
I fled this radiant woman.
From her light I found no shadow
of mountain, wall, or living green.
I have seen her pass, dressed in green,
and thought the sight would make a stone
love, as I, even her shadow.
And I have walked with her on grass,
speaking like a lovesick woman,
enclosed within the highest hills.
But streams will flow back to their hills
before this branch, sappy and green,
catches fire (as does a woman)
from me, who would bed down on stone
and gladly for his food crop grass
just to see her gown cast shadow.
The heavy shadow cast by hills
this woman's light can change to green,
as one might hide a stone in grass.

Re: RealGM WizBoard Poetry, Lyrics, & similar Shenanigans Th
As you can see, a sestina contains six six-line stanzas and a closing three-line stanzas. All lines end with one of six end-words, and the pattern is fixed. I.e., substituting letters for words, if the first stanza's lines end in A, B, C, D, E & F, then the 2d stanza's lines end F, A, E, B, D, C. The end-word of the last line of a six-line stanza is used as the end-word of the first line of the stanza that follows.
The final 3-line stanza also uses the same six words, 3 of them as end-words and the others in the middle of each line, and again the pattern is fixed: AB/FD/EC.
An even more complicated variant is the double sestina -- twelve 12-line stanzas with.... but I won't bother you w/ the rest of the good or bad news about all that!

GRR YOU TAUNT ME. My idiotic summers have been getting in the way of my true calling: insulting people on the internet. And versifying. I thought summers were supposed to be free and easy?
I'd scribbled my notes though, had three going at once. And will get back to you, Im dogged ly faithful bout that sort of thing. Wizards fan, have to be stubborn about pointless exercises in self amused futility. We'll see, I may have an entertainingly productive bout of insomnia one of these days soon.

Doc... you call that Dante sestina "pointless", "futile?"
Don't you realize that Kevin Durant is going to go to the team whose fans compose the best sestina begging him to come? There... I've given you your subject!

My favorite poetry form is the Spanish siesta. Writer's block, blank mind, no inspiration, take a nap. Many great writers have used this form.

Finished Visions and Verses on train ride last week. I admit, I don't really engage with most love poems, so it's probably not too surprising that my favorite in this collection is Leaving Home, the poem that (to me) had a tension and psychological depth that grabbed me. The mood created in that one reminded of southern or Puritan Gothic.
Keep it up.

Wow! Thanks for reading and reviewing!
Of the folks that have read it, you're the first to say that Leaving Home was your fave. That one was actually a re-write of a poem I'd done about 10 years ago simply called Home. I completely re-did it about 5 years ago to include the leaving part. It's also one of the ones I went back and tinkered with the most as I was finishing my manuscript for publishing. Sounds like it paid off!

Re: RealGM WizBoard Poetry, Lyrics, & similar Shenanigans Th
HAH! I was writing something else and found that sestina I neglected to post.
Been Said For Years.
===============================================
In a moment of doubt I wonder if I’m wrong, am I?
Thinking back on all the ways I’ve ever been:
Misspelled words sure, written like they’re said,
Dysmiss my lexic if you wish for that,
Or if I end a sentence with a preposition: ‘about’ or ‘for’
-- but when it comes to facts, I’ve not been wrong for years.
Have not been wrong for years and years years,
Who? Me? Wrong? Not me, no way, not I.
Admit I’m wrong? never gonna, hell: what for?
It’s something that I’ve never ever been!
So you’re not the one can make me cop to that.
Not even by quoting words you think you say I’ve said.
And then twist the meaning of those things you say I’ve said,
That _at the time_ were right-- think back those years,
If later facts proved wrong, well what of that?
It’s not the fault of such a one as I,
When true to my word is all I’ve ever been,
And if truth is wrong: well what on earth’s it for?
I believe what I feel-- though, doubts-- sure, I’ve had three or for...
But dame, if you understand you hear not just what was said,
but what secretly it also might have been,
in the dialect spoken in those years,
now translated differently by people since, and I
cannot now be gullible for that.
Oh and now you’re going to bring up that--
The european kid who once was our small for-
ward, and you’re going to claim that I--
by cherry picking words I won't admit I said--
claimed I meant he’d be our franchise in some years,
When metaphorically just think, he kinda has been:
Like: Our franchise shows great hopes, yet always been
disappointed by how they pan out and that
Never seems to take that many years,
But in months hopes prove spoiled -- so meta-for
-ically it proves the truth of what I said,
he’s like a Vessel of the franchise, is all was meant by I.
And that is all I ever said when I said I’ve been
Saying what I said, and saying that,
For years in some ways already its been said, at least once before, one time, by one like I.
Been Said For Years.

RealGM WizBoard Poetry, Lyrics, & similar Shenanigans Thread
No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.
i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)
Who wrote which?
Hint: And, not even my hero Paul "The Truth" Pierce was the author of either of these ever-enduring/timeless quotes.

SamIam 2010: Truth's ability to play so incredibly efficiently is so UNDERAPPRECIATED. Bballcool 2012: Amazing how great Pierce has been for so long. Continues to defy age! KG 2013: P is original Celtic. Wherever he goes, we go. This is The Truth's house.

Glad you bumped it. Reminded me to order Rico's book - which I just did. I'm not a poetry guy, but maybe it'll convert me. I'll be like... cultured and stuff.

Personally I prefer some Bukowski
Hart Crane is decent too, if not a little amateurish and low brow
