Hahaha. Up thru the Billups trade, bordering A, after that F. But, maybe a D on the backside only because he drafted Monroe, Moose, KCP and even Jennings for where he was picked was not a horrible pick.

Overall a B... He gave us a championship, and six conference finals appearances.

Really 4 names and $200 million dollars... Ben Gordon, Charlie V, Josh Smith, and Brandon Jennings.

I think those are the 4 huge reasons Joe D is no longer a GM. Those guys really messed things up for us, and made it difficult for the coaches Dumars did have in place.

I can understand taking Darko (everyone makes draft mistakes) and I can understand the Billups trade (it had become clear we weren't going to win another championship as is and he took a calculated risk)... but handing over so much money to those 4 FAs is what really sealed the deal. To have a player like Jennings or Smith be successful you need to have a coach who will demand the respect of his players in the locker room and isn't afraid to sit guys who aren't playing the right way.

B sounds both right and wrong at the same time. The Pistons won a title during his tenure with a starting five that he either acquired via trade or drafted. They went to six straight Eastern Conference Finals and were a couple of bad breaks from another title or two.

There are so many other fanbases out there who claim they would accept a team that is terrible for 80% of the time but contends for titles the other years. Well....we had that. Dumars used a risky strategy of getting players that either weren't clear commodities or hadn't worked elsewhere else because he thought he could get more out of them. It worked with Billups, Big Ben, and Sheed - it didn't at all with Iverson, Gordon, Charlie V, Josh Smith, etc.

So what we are left with is a team that was great to watch during the first half of his tenure and miserable the second half. But how many other teams record / success in his 15 year or so reign would you have taken over his Pistons? The Spurs, Lakers, and Heat for sure - they won multiple titles. The Mavericks as well since they won a title and have been a very competitive team consistently. Who else? The Celtics? They have had bad years as well, especially towards the beginning of Ainge taking over. The Cavs or the Thunder? Two teams that bottomed out and drafted superstars but have yet to capitalize on them with a title...

Actually I'll revise my grade to an A. Because even with all the bad moves, I can't pick more than 4 teams overall success I'd rather have had experienced over the Pistons during Dumars time.

Grade dumars job as a gm

Fans will be unhappy unless the team is winning a championship every other season. And then at some point they get upset that their team only won one championship in 3 years. Look at the Red Wings: 4 championships and playoffs every season since 1991, but fans have been calling for Ken Holland's job for 2 or 3 seasons now.
Fans have short term memories and only care about the present.
Dumar's deserves an A plain and simple. Back to back finals appearances with a title is more than enough. The Pistons aren't one of the NBA's premier organizations that has a long legacy of winning and legendary player history. The fact that this team has 3 titles is amazing in itself. We should be thankful to have had the opportunity for a 4th and to be a contender year after year for the better part of a decade.

We're all head over heels for SVG, but if he can't at the least replicate Joe D's results, then what?

Stuckey was his best draft pick. He broke up what we had 2 or 3 years too soon. If he didn't win a ring and make 6 straight conference finals he would be the worst gm of his era Gordon, cv, j smith all overpays for wanna be stars. That ring saved his ass.

considering 10 teams have won them since 1980 I'd say not much else matters when it comes to his resume. Did he make bad decisions? Yes, but he brought championship basketball back to Detroit

If you are happy or at least content with where we are right today as an org than you can't really pick apart Dumars' decisions because if he didn't do even the one you hated most than we might not have Drummond today or might not have Stan Van Gundy here now.

There is maybe five coaches I'd rather have over Stan and maybe 10 players in the league I'd trade Drummond for straight up.

As everyone has pointed out, Detroit won a ring, in a small market.
I would rate that 6th best since 2000 after Lakers, Spurs, Heat, Mavs, and Celtics.

I think that's an A- at worst.

For those of you giving him an E- or F, what would you rate teams that never even got to a conference finals?

Dumars sucess = A++++++++++++++++

Dumars failure F-

Its as simple as that. Dumars was the Gilbert Areanas of the GM world. When he was good he was one of the best. When he was bad he was god aweful.
Pistons vs. Warriors in the Finals in 2017 - With KCP hitting a game winner so the Pistons dont get swept.

If you look at the last 15 years and rate teams on the following scale.

3 teams gets As, 3 teams get A-, 3 teams get B+, 3 teams get B, 3 teams get B-, 3 teams get C+, 3 teams get C, 3 teams get C-, 3 teams get D+, 3 teams get D

Detroit is probably an A-.... but at worst a B+

How much of the decline do we blame on Mr D not wanting to pay the tax?

We were trading valuable assets for next to nothing towards the end of our ECF run.

Throw in the fact we didn't hit a home run with any draft pick except Prince while contending and it's remarkable we accomplished what we did.
