If the Jays had any money to spend this winter, I'd put the majority of it towards Russell Martin. The catcher position is by far the weakest spot in the Jays lineup, IMO.

As far as this game thread, if BLC stopped giving a ****, that's a pretty big sign that the season is over (if the Jays play over the last month wasn't indication enough).

Well, he did have a sub 2 ERA last year. Had to think he wouldn't struggle forever. He's obviously more than capable of good pitching and has dominated this team many times before.

Mookie Betts could be a heck of a player (and no, I'm not basing this on this game alone). Bautista for Betts + Swihart + another prospect would pique my interest.

When nothing was done in the off-season to improve a last place team management assured fans that money would certainly be available if needed during the season. Then during the spring fans were made aware by an independent source—Ken Rosenthal—that Blue Jay management was forced to play pass the hat with their players in order to collect enough money to afford Ervin Santana, a one year commitment that ownership was not willing to subsidize. But management assured Blue Jays fans money would be available if needed.

Whenever fan grew sceptical about the promise of money Beeston would make a public appearance and assure fans that money is indeed available. Beeston’s favourite line is that he’s never gone to ownership for a financial request and been turned down. If this is true then perhaps ownership is not to blame, perhaps it is Beeston. Perhaps Beeston never asks. It is likely however that ownership has told Beeston not to ask so they won’t need to turn him down—that way he can make his claim and not lie when doing so.

It was disturbing to hear that during the recent commissioner’s vote Beeston sided with White Sox owner and noted labour hawk Jerry Reinsdorf’s bid to appoint a commissioner willing to start a labour war with the players—a tactic that failed each of the eight times the owners tried before. Fortunately for baseball, and for the fans, Reinsdorf’s nominee Tom Werner didn’t gain enough support to upend favourite Rob Manfred for the position. Manfred may not be an ideal choice but there was a succession plan in place. Manfred’s intention, as it was under Selig, is to avoid any labour difficulties and prevent any more interruptions to a baseball season. As doddering as Selig appeared in recent years it is that direction which has stood him most proud.

For whatever reason Beeston supported Reinsdorf, and it makes me think that perhaps Beeston no longer carries the moniker of smartest man in baseball. Perhaps Beeston has occupied his lofty position for too long. I believe there are certain people, at one time smart and progressive, who grow more conservative in time and become a negative influence over the people who work for them. Perhaps Beeston has reached the end of his usefulness and is doing more harm than good in his position.

It may be time for Beeston to begin another presidential search—and this time he should immediately eliminate himself as an option.

The only thing left in the season that would make me feel better is if an opposing pitcher throws a perfect game against the Blue Jays. It would be fitting.
