I don't think any current Bull is a lock at all. Noah and Taj will probably be traded and Rose will only be retired if he stays through a next deal and is healthy and we contend.

That won't happen for several reasons:

1. Jo will retire long before Rose, most likely.
2. Its a night for each guy to be individually celebrated. They did Pip/MJ separate, the greatest duo on NBA history.
3. Its an event at the UC. From a marketing perspective, ownership will want two events, not one.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that Noah would be retired based on what he's done to date, were he traded. Including the article quoted by the OP. Its a projection based on assumptions.

Same with Rose. For all we know, he'll never be better than average again. These posts are all projections into the future.

Frankly, I don't see how Artis Gilmore's 53 isn't retired already. The man was here 6 seasons. In that span, he was a 4-time All Star. He averaged 20 points, 11.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.2 blocks on 60% shooting from the field, including two seasons of 67% and 65% from the field. On Basketball-Reference.com, he most similarly scores with Shaq (89.4), Bill Russell (88.8), David Robinson (88.5), Moses Malone (82.6), Dan Issel (81.4), Hakeem Olajuwon (79.4), Kareem (73), Walt Bellamy (70.9), Patrick Ewing (64.1), and Wilt Chamberlain (63.6), which puts him in elite company.

Artis' number is retired by no one. It should be retired here.

I think Hinrich is a possibility to get his jersey retired - I'm 100% it will get retired if the Bulls somehow win a Championship in the next few years while Kirk is still with the Bulls.

The next in line would definitely have to be Noah if he continues to stay healthy and play at a high level. I think if he signs another extension with the Bulls and actually stays with the team throughout the contract period, I'm going to go as far to say that it will be a lock that he'll have his jersey retired even if he ends up being traded at 35 or whenever his next contract will be up.

3 points made: 1st, by a significant margin

Steals: 3rd

Total points: 9th, 252 points away from Reggie Theus for 8th

As I said, I'm not going to be entirely bothered or stunned if the Bulls franchise decides not to retire his jersey, but lets not act like he is some scrub that hasn't achieved anything of significance either.

Ok, let's look at what the players who have their numbers retired by the Bulls have in common shall we.
They all made the all-star team at least twice in their career, they all made the NBA defensive team at least twice in their career, they averaged at least 14 ppg during their careers.

Kirk has never been a all-star, made 1 NBA defensive team and only 3 times in his career has he averaged more than 12 ppg, that was in his 2nd, 3rd and 4th season.
He has done nothing to get his jersey retired. He is a fan favorite and obviously a organizational one.

Never saw Sloan play, so I can't relate to his impact on the Bulls. Noah is awesome, but I don't see him as a landmark player for the Bulls as much as I do an uber fan favorite. He has time to get there though especially if he signs another deal. To me jersey retirement is about landmark organization talents. A player who you can't imagine someone else wearing his number or having a comparable impact.

Deng and Noah have done similar things btw.

You also have to remember position. Gilmore was clearly the best, but he only played 6 seasons., Noah is easily the second best center the franchise has seen.

Not that Noah isn't good, but in my time there haven't been many good Bulls centers. We're talking Cartwright, Longley, Chandler, and Wallace since 1991. So the bar is at the point where you can simply step over it.

Only his rebounding numbers were markedly better in Kentucky. And, he played less years there than he did here!

Artis played 17 seasons in the ABA and NBA. His last year with the Bulls and Celtics was a throwaway, where he was clearly done. In the other 16 seasons, Artis played 5 with Kentucky, 6 with Chicago, and 5 with San Antonio. His number should be retired in all three of those places, but most notably in Chicago.

Wilt Chamberlain's jersey is retired by the Warriors, Lakers, and 76ers. WIlt played 5 and a half years for the Warriors, 3 and a half for the 76ers, and 5 with the Lakers. I know Artis is no Wilt. But Artis is right up there with the best centers of all time.

In my mind, yeah. I don't know how the people making those decisions think about it though. Before the ACL injury, Rose was already one of the most iconic athletes in Chicago history, and had brought a greater level of relevance and excitement to the Bulls than anyone besides Jordan. I think that's the kind of stuff you retire jerseys for, not stuff like career stats and accolades.
