I don't think Rondo is intending to go anywhere, anytime soon.

I can see the Celtics signing a new contract with him, in the near future.
That said: We definitely aren't going to let him go to free agency, for free.

Danny's gotta be talking about his Contract, as we speak.

Jackie M is truly great at human interest stories about athletes, and I'm not using the word "great" lightly. That gets her forgiven for her mediocrity at other kinds of reporting.
Banned temporarily for, among other sins, being "Extremely Deviant".

If it were true, the danger is that he's planning to leave, maybe for New York, but intends to say all the right things to keep his leverage.. So we'll get a year of semi-assurances and then a shock.

A couple things ...

We drafted a replacement for Rondo that could be a better leader, scorer, and is younger...
Rondo can not reject any trade we make with him.
Rondo is insisting on plying the free agent game and refusing to sign an extension.

The day we drafted Smart, was the day we replaced our best player on our roster....but, let's be real, Rondo hasn't played at a level where you sit back and say WOW and you pass up a better talent. If we trade him for some assets now, we can balance out the roster and it won't set us back further. Let the best offer win.

From all directions it seems if and when denials aside....the right deal comes Rondo is gone. The future plans do not include him......

Ainge traded up in the draft last season to pick KO, a player who plays the same position as Sully. No talk from anybody about KO being the Sully replacement.

This year Ainge drafted a combo guard in the lottery, a player with below average NBA caliber playmaking, who very few on this board even wanted to draft, and now all of sudden this signals that Rondo is gone?

A deal just do not make sense right now, and the only reason Rondo would leave via free agency is IF Ainge lowballs him which would not happen.

I am not against trading Rondo for the right deal, the time is just not right.

Knowing Ainge, they want to get a good look at Smart before they hand him the reins, and they want to see how Rondo looks with this group- and they're going to see if any 'win now' trades come along before they deal Rondo and reboot the whole thing. So December makes the most sense for a deal.

But waiting like that is always risky, especially if Rondo has another injury. This team is just so flawed on paper, though, that unless they can steal Hibbert or Sanders, they're looking at another season with less than 40 wins, but not so few that they're guaranteed a top 5 pick..

Oh God, please not to Boston. My bet's Dallas or Houston. But what do those teams have to offer? So I think it's straight up signing in free agency if ever Rondo's leaving.

In a trade I'm hoping it's to Charlotte, Phoenix, or OKC.

I'm not sure I put too much stock into what Jackie M says, great writer but not exactly "tapped in" to the players.

But anyways, the real reason I wouldn't trade Rondo this season is the following:

We've got an amazing stock of assets, if they pan out like we hope. We are in an excellent position to make a big deal in 2015. Part of that deal may be sending out Smart. I think we keep Rondo and try to do Wyc's fireworks next offseason. This includes re-signing Rondo. Smart, at this point, isn't necessarily Rondo's replacement, he's just a trade asset. Let's see what happens this year, if Rondo returns to form and a lot of our players improve, we will be in a great spot to get back to the top quickly, and in that case we want a veteran PG Rondo leading us.

But even let's say things don't work out and we can't make a big splash. We STILL won't lose Rondo for nothing, because he is going to push for the extra year he can get in a sign and trade. So we will get something back. Maybe it won't be quite as good as Mclemore and a pick, but hell it can't really be that much worse. We will still get something decent.

Wow lot of denial in this thread..

No one said a deal is imminent - just that Rondo wants out. Rondo could have told Jackie M.. How is that so impossible? She is a well respected writer - Rondo might have read her stuff and liked her enough to spill this. I am amazed so many are accusing her of perjury..

As you guys point out she mostly does fluff/human interest stories? Why would she make this up?

+1
Doesn't matter if a Rondo trade bringing back good value is out there or not. He doesn't want to be part of a rebuilding team. He wants to play in July for Championships like he's grown accustomed to.

To get the players that will put us on that level, we will need to be incredibly lucky. I have no doubt that if we get the right players here before he must decide, then he will re-sign here. Right now though, why would he?
We'll be lucky to make the playoffs for the next few years and Rondo is likely not a franchise player at this stage of his career.

She's saying this 'off air' and has no reason to lie. She's obviously got a source that she swears by.
I wonder who the source is?
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

Mencius wrote:Possibly an expanded version could include Anthony and Babb from us, and Jason Thompson from them.

... There's not a team in the NBA that would want Joel Anthony, or Babb.

If the Celtics could have traded Joel Anthony for a bag of potato chips, they would have.

Getting back to the subject, let's see if a RealGM poster will bail us out here.

It's been written above that Jackie has "sources" in Boston. Who???

Her "source" should be public knowledge, by now, at least to those who read her all the time, which I don't. Anyone other than Ainge, Stevens, Rondo, Bill Duffy or Wyc would make me suspect that her editor at ESPN is scratching his head, since she already said what she did "on air.".

And sources are not a secret, you can draw a family tree of sources for any writer, and you can quickly see which teams they are connected to and at what level.

The best "source" tree that comes to mind is the now "retired" Peter Vecsey (he's 72 years old, and retired about 5 years ago). In his day, Pete was wired in to a coach, GM or team President (plus many "star players") on more teams than anyone.

Nobody's concerned with the ongoing theme of Jackie M being out of touch with Celtics basketball? She constantly brings up dated things to support new ideas. I really think she hasn't been close since 2010.

Not saying this stuff isn't true, but I honestly don't think Jackie is reliable anymore.

She thought Isaiah Thomas was still available in a Sacramento deal. I don't think she's keeping up with things.

Jackie is not out of touch. She's suddenly not reliable because you don't like the trade?

She probably got her info from the owners and Ainge. Ainge has known her for 30 years. The owners have read her for 30 years.

Can we stop shooting the messenger. Jackie M. has the dirt. She knows more than she's letting on. Maybe it's dated info from earlier this summer, but she's a legit source.

I don't know. I highly doubt if her source was Ainge or the owners she would be saying anything. She would lose the trust of them for saying anything because it would hurt their bargaining power to a degree.

I tend to doubt Rondo is chummy with Jackie, given she is prone to take shots at him frequently in her pieces as being "moody," "difficult," and "stubborn." Wasn't she the one who stated that Rondo hung out in his car before games until the last minute before heading into the locker-room for pregame a few years back?
