2014 NFL Regular Season Open Thread: Week 1 (9/4-9/8)
Well, the preseason has finally ended, and the final roster moves will be made in the next few days, so I figured I'll just get the ball rolling on an open thread for the season.
Week 1 begins on a Thursday yet again, and the kickoff game this season is a rematch of the Fail Mary Game from 2012, between the Green Bay Packers and the defending Super Bowl champs, the Seattle Seahawks. Here's the full schedule for next weekend:
Thursday (830pm):
Green Bay at Seattle
Sunday (1pm):
New Orleans at Atlanta
Minnesota at St. Louis
Cleveland at Pittsburgh
Jacksonville at Philadelphia
Oakland at NY Jets
Cincinnati at Baltimore
Buffalo at Chicago
Washington at Houston
Tennessee at Kansas City
New England at Miami
Sunday (430pm):
Carolina at Tampa Bay
San Francisco at Dallas
Sunday (830pm):
Indianapolis at Denver
Monday (7 & 10pm):
NY Giants at Detroit
Sandy Eggo at Arizona

Also, a bit of bad news for Niners fans, Aldon Smith has been suspended for the first nine games of the season for violating the Ginger Hammer's personal conduct and substance abuse policies.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has been suspended for the first nine games of the season for violating the NFL's personal-conduct and substance-abuse policies.
Smith will be eligible to return to the 49ers' active roster on Nov. 10 following the team's Nov. 9 game against New Orleans.
"Our organization has known this decision would come and we have prepared for it as a team," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement Friday. "Aldon has taken responsibility for his actions and has continued to show growth personally and professionally. We will continue to support him, but it is time to put this matter behind us and focus on the season ahead."
Smith, who met with commissioner Roger Goodell on Aug. 8, was sentenced in July to 11 days of work release in a Santa Clara County (Calif.) court after his September 2013 arrest for drunken driving. It was his second such arrest since entering the NFL in 2011. Also, Smith had three felony gun charges knocked down to misdemeanors.

I have a feeling they are going to lose to Dallas. The starters have looked out of sorts in the preseason and this injury hurts.
I think there is a pretty good chance the Cards finish ahead of them in the division.

there is enough depth to take care of team like dallas. they might struggle against good teams at first but not enough to miss the playoffs, both bowman and smith coming back at the thick of things.

Carr to start over Schaub. No brainer. Raiders-Jets would've been interesting anyway just to laugh at Schaub, but now it's really interesting.
Watt gets a huge extension. Another no brainer.

Re: 2014 NFL Regular Season Open Thread: Week 1 (9/4-9/8)
FINALLY Week 1 is upon us.
Skins opening in Houston...I expect a low scoring defensive struggle. Watt and Clowney will dominate our OL, but I think our D should be able to hold their own.
I'm hopeful we can grind out a 20-17 type of win, but it wouldn't shock me if we lost and looked awful on offense.
Hopefully Gruden can come up with ways to allow RG3 to make plays. Just making him sit in the pocket and read defenses is going to get him killed.

Eric Maynor is the worst basketball player I've ever seen.

Niners will also be without Navorro Bowman and perhaps Ray McDonald too. Defense lost a lot of teeth there.
Derek Carr starting for OAK, makes them more viable. They might actually win a few games.
My picks coming Thursday afternoon. Happy to be picking games again instead of just waiting for the season to kick off.

It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

interesting to see what the rook with the big arm and pretty release can do, to see if he can translate what he showed in preseason vs. vanilla defenses to a real game where the defense is tailored just for him, to see if the pocket presence concerns in his college scouting reports will show up, to see if he can wash away the stink of his brother, if only for one game. in all ikelihood he'll struggle like most rookie qbs do, but then again few predicted that he would win the starting job from day 1 either. what if he does light up the jets? what if he stands in the face of that jets front 7, and doesn't flinch, and starts firing lasers? i ain't gonna miss that.
same goes for all the rookie qb's that we heard about the past year, except carr is the only one starting this week.

Ready for another NFC west blood bath.
Even with key injuries or suspensions to everyteam not named Seattle in the division.

Excited for the Rams opener which I likely won't get on TV in Houston. So I'll likely stick to laughing at the Texans' QB.
